Paint help needed
I am painting an 83 Toyota truck. I am not getting the paint to change colors when it goes onto the truck. I have used this same paint and paint code on my 88 4Runner build. I am using the same paint gun, compressor, and even the same promer and thinner. Only thing that has changed would be the batch of paint, but otherwise is all the same as I have done before.
The paint is Nason 040 Toyota Super White. It actually is laying on nicely but just isnt changing colors as it should. Basically just a lighter gray. Even if I put clear on it, I dont feel it would change a whole lot.
I am using a base coat/clear coat and have painted 4 other truck using base coat/ clear coat. I am not a professional, but not exactly a newbie at this.
I ran a test spray on my trailer to see if it was possibly just bad paint. It changed to a white instantly when it went on to the trailer.
I have several post on Yotatech, but this is my first post in the general questions area. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have a nice spray pattern, paint appears white in can and in the spray gun and you can tell that on the trailer it is a definite white. But not on the truck.
I have talked to a couple of other Yotatechers on the phone that do paint and 2 other guys I know personally and they are stumped.
Paint I am using.

Paint on stick and same paint on truck that I have painted. Actually around 5 coats just to try and change colors from primer to the white.

Test spray on my trailer just to show the difference.

This is the exact same color that it should be. I painted this myself using this Toyota 040 Super White by Nason.

I'm like you in painting experience. Maybe we will both learn from this.
I have never used that brand of paint. I use the HOK, House of Kolor stuff. I get exactly what I bought, but I still might not like the results due to my own failures.
Are you using a bright white Primer? Are you cutting with the right amount of reducer & hardner at the correct speed?
It looks like you over cut the paint since its so thin & runny on the red trailer. Mine never looked like that even with the 70's era laquers. If you have done enough of this maybe you really did get a bad batch of paint. That 4runner does look good so your tecnique cannot be that far off.
I just did "wild Cherry" on the tailgate & fender. Bright white primer 3:1:1 three parts primer, one hardner, one reducer. Shot like a charm and I let it harden over night since its cold & it needs more time. Then I did the wild cherry at 1:1 & color sanded it with 3000 grit. So its a little lighter due to the white base sealer / primer. Show Klear coat and its done.

Sure did with the cab. It turned out great. Didnt get the bed done as was limited on space and time, but will get to it in the next day or two.
The paint itself was good. We tried a hardner that had a quick flash time and moved the truck to a different building and it turned out great. Didnt get a single run in the paint, but got 2 runs in the clear. Those will be easy to get out.
Really think the building was damper then we thought and changing to a quicker flash activator made a big difference.
