over heating issue

Hello all,

I have a 1991 pickup, V6 4X4. On warm to hot days, my truck tends to want to over heat with the temp gauge going to about 3/4 and I have to blast the heater. My temp gauge also rises when going up hill.

I've read several post and tried different things.
I've raised the front end with the radiator cap off to eliminate any air in the system. I changed my water pump about 4 years ago, done by a mechanic. I already replaced my temp gauge as well. The only thing I have not done is change my fan clutch because I just found out it may be bad.

Now I am stuck. The bolts holding the fan clutch to the pulley are rounded off. I have only tried to remove one seeing how the others are already rounded off. I tried heating the nut with a torch but that did not work either

Any suggestions on how to loosen the nuts or remove the fan clutch without doing any real damage to anything else?

When was the last time you serviced your cooling system? You said you replaced the temp gauge.....you mean the temp sensor? What about the thermostat?

Oh yeah, changed the thermostat as well.

Thanks for the link. Went to Sears and picked them up for $30

Gonna give it a shot tomorrow after work.

So I could not get my easyout sockets over the nuts because of the space between the fan clutch and the nuts

Don't know what I am going to do now.

Die grinder with a cut off wheel. New studs are east to source at a local hardware store.

Try needle nose vise grips.

Also you may want to try using a 6 point box end wrench or try using a flare nut wrench on the rounded off nut if the corners are rounded off. I'm no expert on the 3.0 but if I recall correctly the fan is on a separate shaft and is not connected to the water pump. You could pull the shaft assembly to get better access out of the engine compartment.

When I as researching my wanting to over heat issue, I noticed others were having similar issues. Well it seems like I have fixed my problem.

I was able to take the nuts off with a chisel and a hammer. I replaced my fan clutch. During my test drive, my temp gauge never went past 1/4 of the way. Now I just need to find a hill with a long grade to see if my temp gauge will climb.

My fan clutch seemed fine as it would turn off when I turned off my truck. It also had some resistance when turning it but I was able stop my fan clutch with light pressure from a pen. Then it was fine. So to ease my mind I went ahead and replaced the fan clutch anyways and it seems to have done the trick.
