Cool Oil press. fluctuation. Why???

Hey guys, I've been around cars/trucks, and wrenches long enough to do lots of neat stuff, but my experience is mostly with Fords and Hondas.
Over the past year I have been getting to know Toyotas a bit. I built a 1.5L Twin cammer for my lil Paseo, and a few months ago, a 22R for my 2WD Pick-up. (re-ground crank, new rings, bearings, gaskets) Just started driving a '90 Toyota Tercel (WINTER-BEATER) a couple months ago. I noticed that the oil light would go on and go out repeatedly for ten-fifteen times with about a five second interval each time. The valve-train would get all noisy and stuff with the press. drop of corse. So I spent all yesterday pulling the engine/tranny to replace the oil pump seals as well as a bad clutch. When I took the oil pump off, I noticed a hardened o-ring around the pump, and it looked like it was forcing oil out all around the pump housing. So I'm thinkin' that the pump was cavitating or something. Went for a test drive last night after replacing old seals and clutch...all was fine. Started er' up this morning and the oil light is on and off AGAIN! Could this be due to a faulty check valve in the engine block??? Sorry for posting a car question on a truck sight, but just thought I'd try. ALSO, Going to be looking for Baja style, long travel susp. for my 2WD yota Truck; any links for that would be sweet! Thanks PS; Truck is a 1990 5 spd long box w/standard steering.

besides the obvious 'check the dipstick' suggestion... what weight oil? as the oil light comes on and goes off is the engine idle speed fluctuating as well? is the warm idle speed at around 800?

as for suspension:

10W30 oil. The engine does this upon cold start. Once it's warmed up a bit, the press. stays up.
The idle goes up when the press. drops and visa versa when it's pumping oil. You can tell when the pump is working cause the idle drops slightly and the "clacking" goes away, then comes back, then goes away, then......It's full of oil. I'll have to pull the pan and make sure the pick-up tube is fully intact.
