i have a 94 runner with a 3vz and i think i tightened my oil filter to tight last time i changed it. Iwas wondering if it possible to take off the filter with out draining the oil since its on the top part of block not bottom. just trying to not have to dump oil to check the filter. any help is greatly appreciated.

 

you can take the filter off without having to drain the oil, though some WILL spill out. About a half quart round about, good idea to have more on hand to top the level off when you are done. but there is no problem with taking it off. i would suggest, though, that if you over tightened it and are planning to take it off, go ahead and replace it. not because its damaged already, but chances are the you will damage it while removing it.

Unless it is leaking, I'd leave it be until your next oil change. It's not going to hurt anything, just be a bastard to get off in 2500 miles without the tool.

 

If it gets stuck, just pound a screwdriver thru it and use it for leverage, lol, works every time.

Also, when you do take it off, make sure the little rubber o-ring isn't stuck to the block. happened to me once when I overtightened one. It stuck to the block, so when I put the new one, it didn't seat right, started driving down the street and my neighbor started yelling at me that i was leaving a trail of oil.

 

yeah its leaking a little from the filter. i am just gonna get a new filter from napa or toyota and replace it. never thought of the screwdriver idea. might get a little messy though but it is funny. thanks for the help. now i just gotta fix my leaky slave cylinder in passanger rear brakes and all the leaks will be gone.

 

Be careful if you do the screwdriver trick, if its on there tight enough the screwdriver can just tear through the filter making it even harder to remove.

 

Wearing rubber gloves can help too, and no chance of tearing the fitler making it tough to remove.

 

I picked up an oil filter vise grip at Harbor Freight a while back. No filter has ever stood up to the vise grip, they all turn the first time. I used to do the screwdriver technique on a stuck filter, but that is too messy. Link below:

Make sure to oil the gasket on the filter before putting it in or it will leak.
