OEM or universal flasher switch?

Hey Guys! My son and I certainly appreciate the help you guys have offered. Just by searching these forums we've learned alot. I told my brother-in-law about the site as well. He has a late model Tacoma.

The turn signals on my son's truck wouldn't work. We traced the problem down to a burned out bulb and a MISSING flasher unit. After replacing both, they work just fine. My problem comes in where the flasher is concerned. The PO left a universal flasher switch in the truck. It works, but won't stay plugged in. It keeps falling out. Judging by the other relays plugged in around it, (located under the fuse box by the drivers left leg) does the flasher for his truck (85) plug in with a snap-type connector or some sort of retainer on it? Or are the sockets just spread out to far? Would an OEM flasher stay in better? Not a big problem I guess, but it's annoying to be driving around and the turn signals quit working b/c the flasher fell out.

Thanks and once again, what a great site!

Well, on my '85, there is a retaining clip that holds the flasher relay in place. Makes it a real PITA to remove but it does stay in place.

You're absolutely right. While a universal one will plug in and turn signals will work, it will not stay in. Vibration will cause it to fall out and then the Haz/t/s will not work.

So, I checked in today at my local Toyota dealer for the relay. $46.09 JUST FOR THE RELAY!!! And he told me this with a straight face!

So, I guess I shall be heading off to the salvage yard to get one.
