This is one of many threads on the matter. Do a search for speed sensor (VSS) and speedometer. The consensus seems to be the speed sensor on the transfer case.

I can't answer that firmly. Research the threads, there is a lot of info to glean in reading others' topics. My best impression is that if you have a speedo cable, the sensor is in the dash cluster. If you have no cable (electronic) then it's on the transfer case. Again, there is a lot of info from recent questions on this matter.

It may not impact the power but this sensor typically resolves speedometer/overdrive light/trans slipping issues.

Moved to Newbie Tech Section.

A search would be the best place to start.
