not sure what GR i have, need to replace axle

i was driving along when my tires slipped on some ice and caught on dry pavement, i heard a boom and my tires locked up. so its rear end time.

ive done some research and i think i have a 4.10 GR. i obviously need to know this for sure. i have looked at some complete third members from marlincrawler and they dont have them listed in a 4.10 gear ratio. so that got me worried.

the tag in my door says G292/W56, from what ive seen that means its a 4.10.

if i could get a confirmation from you seasoned toyota guys i would be very appreciative! thank you

Yeah you have 4.10's
G = 8.0" gear 29 = 4.100 2 = 2 Pinion, Open Diff

Ok that helps, thanks! Finding one on the other hand. Not so easy. Or cheap it seems

Check out Randy's Ring and Pinion. They sell a lot of the parts you could need. They are just one source, there are many others. http://www.ringpinion.com/

So it looks like I'll just have to take it to a shop and rebuild the rear end with new parts unless I can find a whole assembly somewhere. I'm comfortable with replacing a whole rear end but not setting one up. This is definitely going to hurt my bank account

I have a complete 4.10 3rd member for a 8" rear end. It's out of my 87 Toyota 4x4... I'd sell it to ya but I have no clue what shipping would run. If your interested send me a PM. Please include a cell number if ya got one and I will send ya a couple picks. But it is a 100% flawless 3rd member. Only had 112,000 miles on it when I removed it. Only reason I removed it was I swapped in 4.88's.

Damn I'd say lol. I hope you checked your axle shaft splines. I would pull the axles completely out of you hadn't done so already and clean that housing really good prior to installing new 3rd member. I hate for ya to have a little peice of metal left in there to get caught between the gears. Let me know when you receive that 3Rd member and make sure you clean it up real good before installing. I'm sure it's got dirt on it. As I do not own a garage. Oh have fun unwrapping it too lol. I used alot of bubble wrap

Lol I'm looking forward to getting it. Turns out someone has been in there before
and they had washers between the third member and the axle housing? No idea
why. Axle shafts seem all good. Any trick to reinstalling the shafts or is it pretty
straight forward?

Pretty easy.... When I changed over to 4.88's I didn't even take my tires off. But anyways just shove them back in. You may have to push up or down on the axle to make it slide into 3RD but its all straight forward. Installing is way easier then removing. Those axle can be stubborn to remove if there seized in the housing lol

Lol u seem pumped lol. I'm unsure if Toyota made a 3Rd member gasket. If they did I've never used one. I do suggest not using regular permatex as gear oil will penetrate it and cause leaks over time. I've always used a solution that my local NAPA carries. It's made just for gear oil applications. I'm unsure of the name of it but if you tell someone at your local parts store what your looking for I'm sure they will know what it is an point you in the right direction. Oh and you don't have to gob the sealant on either. Always remember what squirts out on the inside is staying In there. So I'd only suggest a 1/8" to maybe a 1/4" bead all the way around the 3rd to seal it. I always let my cure for a minute or to prior to installing and tightening it down. Another thing that you do not have to do but I always do I'd add a little sealant around the axle flang were your axle bolts to the housing. That's just a precautionary for if a seal would start leaking. Kinda a backup plan ya know.

I'm very pumped. Tired of driving a car that's for sure. Before we install it I have to make a run to the parts store so I'll ask about the sealant. What does everyone recommend for a gear oil? I've seen 75-90 GL5 but I was wondering how much it'll take with a completely disassembled axle. I heard around 2.3 quarts but wasn't sure

I run GL4 in everything. Umm if I'm correct its close to a gallon. Here it's cheaper to buy a gallon then to little jugs lol. I've used both 70/80 and 80/90

Pics? It would have leaked big time and the axles would not have been able to go into the splines on the third..

Fill the third until it starts coming back out the fill hole..

my brother disassembled it saturday night for me cause i had to work a 14 so he roughly explained it to me. from what i understood (hes an awful texter) there were washers between the third and the housing. i thought the same thing you did, it would leak and the shafts wouldnt go into the carrier. im going there in a little while so ill try and figure it out.
