Noob that needs to know where to start

I recently bought a 1989 single cab Toyota pickup and want to make an off-roading beast out it but i dont know where to start. Please learn me the best route to take and if possible best parts to use.

by best advice would be to find some good friends that know a lot about this stuff and then just get your hands dirty. just start doing something, anything. eventually you will figure out that that needs dont before this and this needs done and thats ok the way it is. just start somewhere and itll work. i say that a lot when im workin on stuff. just make it work

where to start on a project is a tough question. if you plan on anything more serious than a little mudding here and there, I'd start with a lift and a solid axle swap with some tires. its gonna cost you but its probably the best start. body armor is always good. a good sound truck is the best start anyone can get though. work out the kinks in the truck and do the maintenance on it. how mechanically inclined are you?

Starting with a solid axle swap? Really? Maybe he would be better off w/ just a lift and tires for now and then he can decide if he wants to spend thousands on an SAS later. Most people do just fine with IFS, escpecially if they're just starting out. Personally, I would rather buy another vehicle for the $$ I'd spend on a SAS.

let me rephrase..... If you plan on rock crawling, SAS. Most people I know that havent, are tired of replaceing parts on the IFS. you are way more likely to break IFS than SAS. It is spendy, but well worth it to get it over with. He did say "off-roading beast" right? that is for sure a key component. He also never got into detail about what he wanted to do with it. what do you want to do with it? brian2sun is right about the fact that you could buy another truck already with SAS or simply stock solid axle for what it will cost you to do it yourself.
