noisey start
i'm a newb to the toyo truck game. just got my 87 xtra pickup 4x4. great truck from GA, just had it under coated so it will take the MI winters a lil better. Since its been getting a lil colder here, it seems to be a little bit noisey on cold start. It has 170k miles on its 22r engine, runs like a sewing machine at 70mph, i commute 56 miles a day and the noisey start is my only real (small) concern.
curious if anyone can set my mind at ease.

22R(E)'s are pretty clattery engines. They're just noisy. There are several things you can check. Valve clearance is one, while the valve cover is off, carefully take a flashlight and examine the driver side timing chain guide rail to verify its still intact. The chain has a tendency to wear out the plastic, which will allow the chain to eat into the front cover and usually can eat into the water jacket causing coolant to get in the oil. They make metal backed replacement guides to help remedy this. Lastly you can check your oil pressure. Verify that it's within factory specs. An FSM will help tremendously. (factory service manual). Or, at a minimum, get a Chilton/Haynes.

Mine has a crazy rattle when I first start it too. Valves are adjusted properly; timing chain and tensioners are in good shape; oil pressure is within spec. I read another thread on this somewhere. Lots of people were confirming that their normally running 22re made the crazy rattle on start up. Some people said their engine didn't. One guy said that he had that rattle and later spun a rod bearing. I also heard it in a YouTube video of someone starting his freshly rebuilt 22re. In my truck, it typically goes away after the first time I rev the engine to 2k rpm or within a few seconds. I think that this noise in pretty common and nothing to be concerned about given that you have checked the stuff rokblok mentioned.
Also, you can download a FSM for free. One of the yotatech subforums has a sticky about it.

i'm going to pull the valve cover this weekend and do some inspecting, does anyone know the valve gap off hand?
my tires only have 3500 miles and i notice they are cupping, so next will be new ball joints, shocks, check bearings and then on to tie rods idler and pitman.

There is some discussion of the engine running quieter with a slightly closer gap in this thread: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116/22re-valve-adjustment-guestion-250906/
Makes me want to play with it just a bit.

I paid $325, in Detroit area. Its the greese coating, they blow that stuff everywhere inside the doors, fenders, tailgate, entier underside of the truck, they drill into the rockers and close with rubber gromets. its a little messy but but being the truck just got here from GA, i felt it was worth it. plus i think it added a couple hundred pounds to the truck.
