Is this noise coming from the u-joint or center/carrier bearing (VIDEO)

1984 Toyota long bed 2wd 22r

Over the last few days I have started to hear a noise from underneath my truck. It is a clicking noise that happens only when I am in gear and pressing on the gas pedal. It usually happens when I am just starting out in 1st and 2nd and sometimes in the 3rd when I am accelerating.

Here is a video clip of it: http://bit.ly/g8GE8f

Does this noise sound familiar?

oh..... motion sick........ *ick*

Anyway that to me sounds like a U joint, had that same freaky squeaky noise before and mine was a dry U joint. Best way to check would be to grease the U joints one at a time and then drive it. When you grease one and the noise stops then you know which one to replace. If you grease them all and still have the noise then it's the carrier bearing and I'll deny ever saying it was a U joint.

Thanks for your suggestion.

What would be the best way to grease the u-joint, and what kind of grease should I use, do I need to worry about dirt collecting because of what I use?

There should be a zerk fitting on the U joints (if not then when/if you replace them make sure and get joints with the fitting) just hook a grease gun up and give it about 6 pumps. I use whatever bearing grease happens to be in my gun at the time, it's the same stuff I use for the ball joints etc...

Some folks recommend that you pump the gun until some of the old grease squeezes out of the u joint, might try that if yours are really dry.
