Newb specific help for my 86 4x4. Gutless!!

Hello all, I love the forum, and appologize if this is a lame question. I bought an 86 4x4 ext. cab (Dream truck) that needed an exhaust system. I just dumped $700 on that, and passed emissions (Woohoo!!!). It is a 22re (Recent rebuild) with an automatic transmission (Booo!). The truck runs and looks great, but is unbelievably slow. I have 305/70/16's on it. What would you recommend I start doing to make it at least get to 40 mph in under 15 seconds? Does it sound like tranny problems? Or is it really this bad, with these big BFG's? Should I regear? Start bolting on horsepower? All hoses look hooked up, but there was also a problem with the exhaust, once they put it on (All new from the manifold back) they noticed on the manifold there were two studs, both which have a hole on each side of them. Does this sound like the wrong manifold? Does something bolt onto this? I can't find it in the chilton I bought. Is it safe to block these off? Please help me with what I should start concentrating on first. Thank you, I really appreciate your help.

Congrats on the new truck. Start looking on Ebay for a OEM Manual, you will not be dissapointed. I don't know about the manifold, maybe a sensor or temp guage? Someone will know on here. You might check your compression.

Thanks, I forgot to mention. I will be driving in town mostly, maybe off-road twice a year for minor wheeling.

Do you have gears for those tires?

You'll want at least 4.88's. 5.29's would give it a little pep.

OK, this is bad, but who would you go to to have gears put in? Approx. cost? I am pretty handy with wrenching, and not scared to get dirty, but have never opened one. Is this something I should try myself? If so, should I order a certain brand? And finally, would 5.29's be my best bet? This from the take off, is getting passed by old model A's slow!! Once up to speed it goes 70, without problem, but I cringe to think when the traffic starts braking!! Definate momentum killer.

something is probably wrong altho an auto 22re is slow anyway. I have a fresh rebuilt 22re bored .020 over and have a full magnaflow exhaust system and it is decent now. It used to be really slow but its not too bad anymore. 0-60 in anyware from 10-15 seconds sounds normal

BTW mine is also an auto (not for long tho!)

Like Ike said, regearing would be a good step in the direction you want to go. 305's with a 5 speed is tolerable, an auto just makes it that much worse.

You'll want to look for a shop to install the gears. You could do it yourself, but unless you know what your doing, having it done would be best.
Contact member ZUK on here, he does installs, you just ship him the 3rds and put them back in on return.

22RE isn't a speed demon to begin with, less that 120 HP stock. Alot of money can be spent on bolt on HP upgrades but it'll still be slow.

You aren't running nearly the tire he is. Its the tire size and stock gears that are killing him.

Mine was listed as 105 new. If it were dyno'd, i'd bet it'd be under 100 now.

305/70/16 r a 33 12.50 16.ur stock tires were only about 28 8.50 so ur pushing a lot more tire.ide gear down to 5.29 and look for a 5 speed.do not do it urself.its to easy to mess up.
