New..What to Look for?

Hey i am a new member but iv visited for quite a while now, and tried to gather up on some research. But here it goes. I am looking to buy a yota truck and im looking at a 90' with 190k miles. Is reg cab v6 5spd 4x4. 3 inch lift with 33's. I have only spoke with the person that owns it after seeing it on the internet. But i plan on going one day this week to look at it. What should i look for that seems to trouble these trucks? Ive heard they have had HG problems but how do i know if it has been replaced? Any obvious markings on the motor? Even if this truck turns out to not be what i get, i still plan on finding another, they seem to be great and hard to beat. But ANY and ALL information that you can give me would be greatly appreciated you can never learn too much. Great site and thanks for having me.

Run the VIN number and check to see it the recalls have been performed. Depending on where you are located check for rust in the body and frame. Check for wear and tear in general.

thankyou, where could i run the VIN to find out? Also the truck supposedly only has a bubbled spot on the tailgait, soo thats good i thought for a 90. But are there any common mechanical problems with this particular model that im looking at?

When he said run the vin just call any dealership they'll be able to tell you, there was a recall on the HG where any toyota dealer would do it 1 time to ever 3.0

So if the one your looking at might have a failing HG and hasnt had the recall, you could possibly get it for a steal

Im guessing if it hasnt had the recall that its too late to do it now. he said the only recall it had was a steering arm. and that the 90 and 91 didn have the hg problem. i told him im about 80% sure they did and he said no. but i drove it today and plan on getting it tommarow morning. it seemed fairly powerful to have 193k and on 33's. seemd like it could use the norm tune up tho

Uhh... No. He is wrong. My 91 blew the hg and took out the bottom end. Toyota footed the bill to the tune of a brand spankin new longblock!

The 88-89 were not covered on the recall.
