new 4runner

just picked up a 1988 4runner today and before anyone asks ill try and get pics up tomorrow. I got it for $500 and it is very clean only problem is it doesnt have a motor. It had a 3.0 in it and i was wondering if anybody had any tips for putting a 22r in it and how hard it is. decided to stick with 3.0 one problem is the 4runner doesnt have wiring harness. i have a 1990 4x4 that does i am wondering if it will work in the 4runner or are the main plugs behind the kick pannel different

PICS BELOW

Don't know much about putting a 22re into a 3vze. I know a lot of people put the 3.4 5vze into the older v6 trucks. If you search for 3.4 swap you'll find a lot of info. That engine is amazing. So is the 22re though.

i have had 2 different vehicles with the 3.4 one was a 99 taco and it was a gutless wonder worse than my 93 3.0 the other was a 96 4runner and it had all kinds of power. but i have had a lot of trucks with the 22r and it is definately in my pinion the best motor yet to be built by toyota had a 2 wheel drive with 345,ooo miles no problems other than regular maintenance. gave it to my brother and he stills drives it

Here's a couple threads. No one actually did it though. It looks like you need to change the engine mounts and all the electric and wiring for a 22re

an engine with 50 more HP is worse than an engine with 50 less just doesn't add up.

my question is why didn't you fix the 3.4?
something was wrong with it, not trying to argue just pointing out facts.

Do the 3.4 swap. You will spend more money getting a 3.0 having no core, no wiring. Get a donor for 500-1500. Swap what you need and part out the rest. I just bought a blown engine '88 Runner myself and that's my plan.

that interior is worth $500 alone - you got the good seats and later model panels that us first gen 4runner guys crave.

I agree - use your saved money to invest in the 3.4 swap

Good luck!

Be sure to check out the classifieds here - you can search and post "wanted" or "WTB" threads. Your doors are very rare so you may have some trouble tracking parts down.

Keep us posted with pics and progress and keep the questions coming
