Needs some advice on engine swap
I have the chance to finally do a swap and looking at either 3rz or 5vz
Heres what I'm looking at
3rz pros: $100
easiest to swap from 22re
better gas mileage
keep it light
preferred engine to swap
cons: needs rebuilt
needs a new head
needs a different bell housing
impossible to find one working in my area
have to drive a ways to get it
5vz pros: power
easier to find working
could be supercharged
cons: $850
needs a lot of extras for the 22re swap can get spendy
or even a 2rz for 800(really wouldn't want to)
need some help in deciding what to do.

Only you really know.
Work Truck loaded down with tools and materials??
Daily Driver for a 100 mile commute one way.
can you do all the work or most of it yourself??
You don`t say really what platform your working on what needs to be done to that to bring it up to speed.

if you put the 3rz in, you'll wish you had done all that work for the 5vz. between fixing up the engine and minor fab work, any engine swap will be about the same amount of effort. i'm nearing the final stages of my 22r-e to 5vz-fe swap, and it hasn't been too difficult. the worst part is not having a shop to do it in, but i'm managing just fine. check out the link in my signature to see tons of pics.

Wyoming 9
working with a 94 dlx extra cab 22re 5speed
Its a daily driver/weekend wheeler/ hunting rig with the occasional load of firewood
only one mile to work, but at least 15 miles to trails.

That's what I fear is putting in the time and effort and regretting that I wish I had gone 5vz

it's honestly not that bad. with any engine swap, you need to worry about exhaust, mounts, trans, driveshafts, wiring, etc. all swaps will have their own inherent quirks. it really comes down to preference.
if you need/want advice on a 22r-e to 5vz-fe swap, let me know, or look through my pictures on my swap thread
edit: i have pretty much the same truck as you, so most of the pictures and information is extremely relevant

love my 3.4, haven't even charged it yet.
you can charge a 3rz either a TRD supercharger or a turbo kit.
really depends on what you want, pros and cons for either one, like weight or torque for example.

Haha, I know there are some people out there that are Toyota purists around here..
But if your going through the trouble of swapping a motor, its about the same work to swap a GM motor as a Toyota motor.......
BUT
There is no denying GM replacement parts are soooo available, and sooo cheap that for broke people like me it just makes sense.
