I got a 79 (and as far as I know a stock 20) It doesn't right up, it takes forever (not kidding) it will give 1 fire and back to turning over and over and so on....

Once its started it runs and purrs and has plunty of power like there is nothing wrong. Once started and warmed up and I turn it off starts right back up like a normal car would

I also have a 4-speed is the 5-speed a different beast or will it work in my 79 4x4? I have access to a few 5-speeds

the 5sp will work. try changing out the ignitor and spark plugs and see if the starter needs to be changed

 

starter turns over with out a hitch! I will try the ignitor as it looks like its from the factory

Also I just took it out on some trails, but I didn't finish my exaust yet it ends at the tranny brace and the (22r manifold) I have a 20r. I didn't put a cover over the egr hole, so this may all be a factor.

It really doesn't have too much power when wheeling. I was going up a steep grade in 4hi and it almost died. I almost had to feather the clutch.

If I get all that finished will it have the lowend grunt or is this why people go to the 22r?
