no disrespect, but you're asking if you should keep your jeep or get a 4runner to turn into a crawler, on a yota forum...lol
IMHO, With the Jeep, you already have an engine with more power (v8 if I'm correct?) and a solid front axle. Two things that Toyota guys do to make their rigs big ass crawlers is do a solid axle swap(unless you already have a pre 1985, even then, they might swap in a stronger dana front and rear or something) and drop in a bigger motor like a Toy 3.4 or a Chevy V6 or the likes.
It's all about your preference. I personally think the lack of power in the 22re's makes up for the amount of maintenance I see Jeep guys doing.

Was a tad odd but no worries. If the Jeep is in good running shape then keep it and build it, I mean we all didn't start out with Toyotas (I ran IH Scouts for a while) but eventually we all ended up here.
My recommendation would be to find a 1985 Toyota 4runner (removable top, solid front axle, 22re fuel injected engine) and use that as a platform, but then I'm pro-Toyota.

Not that I want to argue but the Toy axles are plenty strong for tires up to 37's I believe, or at least that's what I've read. Oh and I agree on the maintenance remark.

I see guys running 40 tires on toyota axle...dont know if they have problems though...
and when I think of rock crawlers, I think of the crazy asses here in my town that have chevy 350's on full width axles and 44 mud boggers and with enough steel to build a sky scraper
