yeah, so a gear change can be not as simple as a ring and pinion change you should be replacing the pinion bearing, crush sleeve and solid pinion spacer meant for the v6 housing using "v6" R&P set.

So long as you have a V6/Turbo housing/3rd member to put all that in.

If not just get the V6 R&P with a V6 outer pinion bearing(or 4cyl will also work), 4cyl inner pinion bearing, and a 4cyl crush sleave or solid pinion spacer. And trust me on this, that will all fit perfectly in the 4cyl housing/3rd member. And if you want to take that setup to the next level, get the 4-pinion carrier from a V6/Turbo diff and slap that in there too. With V6/Turbo carrier to 4cyl 3rd member conversion bearings, available from a couple different sources now.

The only parts not swappable between the two 3rd members are the carrier bearings, inner pinion bearings, and the crush sleaves/solid pinion spacers specific to each. The inner pinion bearings are all the same diameter and can actually fit in any of the 3rd members. But their differences in "thickness" will cause ring and pinion fitment issues if not used in the 3rd members designed to house them, or the crush sleaves/solid pinion spacers of the correct length for use with them.

I've done all my research on this subject too, as you can see.

And just to clarify here, we are only talking rear gears not front as there is no difference in front 3rd between V6/turbo and 4cyl correct?

That's correct. Because there are no V6/Turbo or 4cyl specific 7.5" front axles(diffs). Both versions, ADD and non-ADD, are used for any engine configuration.

The 7.5" IFS diff

'86-95 IFS trucks and 4Runners, and all '93-98 T100s use a 7.5" front diff that is offset to the passenger's side. Later models came with ADD (Automatic Differential Disconnect) which uses a vacuum actuated mechanism to disconnect the drivers side axle shaft from the differential. Carriers and gear sets are interchangeable between the two different versions (and also happen to be the same as used in the 2wd Toyota pickup 7.5" diffs). One difference between ADD and non-ADD diffs is that the carrier in an ADD differential has needle bearings supporting the axle shafts at the differential. The non-ADD diffs did not have this bearing and sometimes the passenger side axle flange wears the carrier and becomes loose or wobbly, eventually causing oil leaks, noise, and possible spider gear damage. ADD and non-ADD diffs are swappable as are most of their parts. This makes it possible to change your ADD diff to non-ADD by simply swapping parts as I've done in the picture to the right. This is desirable to some people since some of the ADD stubs are smaller diameter than the non-ADD stubs and are therefore slightly weaker.
- Passenger's side
- Low pinion
- 27 spline axles

* This diff is based on the 2wd pickup 7.5" rear diff- same internals, different housing.
