need advice on removing top

My wife and i just bought an 85 4runner in original condition. I would like to remove the top but it has never been removed and i don't want to tear the seal. any advice on how to go about this. i have a neighbor that suggested silicon spray and letting it soak in. thanks eric

I never had any trouble with the seal on mine, it is pretty tough. Silicone might help if you find it sticking when you slowly raise the top. But if it is stuck to the bed rail, it'll probably just pull loose from the shell (just some adhesive there):
