n00b question re: sliders

Why don't they make rock sliders that attach to where the running boards mount on the body?

Are the mounting points not strong enough?

I don't personally think I would want a ROCK to hit anything or be SLIDING on anything as sturdy as Rock Sliders that were attached to anything but the frame. The point is to protect your body from damage...If you had sliders mounted to the body and hit something with them is surely would mess up some body panels! If your just wanting to put Sliders on just for looks and a step maybe then I guess you could find other ways to mount them without welding or bolting them to the frame but I wouldn't! Is that kinda what your looking for?

No, really I was just curious why no one has developed any true "bolt on" versions for our trucks, utilizing those factory mounting points. What you said certainly does make sense, though.

Why would you want to bolt sliders to the running board mounts? If you're looking for something to bolt there, go with nerf bars, but nerf bars are worthless compared to sliders. A shopping cart will ding them. Like yotarunner said, the factory mounts won't hold up to the abuse a slider will take, the mounts would probably bend the first time you hit something. You can bolt on sliders to your frame, you just have to drill holes

Looks like its time to start shopping for weld-in sliders.

If you want a true rock slider those points are not strong enough. If your looking for more of a rock slider look and not the functionality I would look into nerf bars or something, I think those mount to the original points.

Yes they do! If you plan on doing alot of offroading, do it right and get sliders.

I think 4crawler makes a bolt on option. The purpose of having the sliders is to protect your body and rockers. If you hit the slider and it's attached to the body it will also be damaged at the point where it's mounted. Most sliders can support the full weight of the vehicle, your body can't! You can always bolt on a pair of sliders purchased from anyone, however it will be far stronger if it is welded directly to the frame as apposed to drilling numerous holes through your frame to mount them. Welded on sliders are removable if that is a concern, it'll take a bit of grinding but they'll come off.

Trail gear also makes a great kit. It comes with gussets with bolts holes if thats how you want to mount them. But, if you ever remove them you'll have bolt holes in your frame rails, so welding is probably the best option IMO.

The Rockstomper dual-tube sliders on my '95 were designed to bolt to the pinchweld in about 12-15 places AND be welded/bolted to the frame. Drilling 30 holes in my the pinchwelds was not my best choice in the rust country Central New York, but the wheel wells rotted out long before the rocker panels.

I do make sliders that bolt to the factory holes on certain vehicles, like the Nissan Xterra and Pathfinder. Those have decent holes in the frame (or unibody) with nuts welded inside to attach to.

Otherwise, all other applications can either be bolted on (with newly drilled holes) or welded on:

I have run bolted-on sliders on my 4Runner for over 10 years now. Easy to remove for painting or when I changed from 1" to 3" body lift:
