My new search

I'm currently, looking at a 1996 4runner, v6, 5spd, 4x4 with 144,xxx miles on it. It's in pretty good condition the former owner had an aftermarket roof rack on it and it wore down the paint in one area and the driver's seat is a little worn (just get a seat cover.)

Here some pictures of it:

Worn paint:

If I remember right they are asking 7495 (might need a battery or new alternator)

That's about the price I was thinking. The rack that they had up top also damaged the paint a bit. I have the same problem on my camry but I remove my roof rack once and while and clean and wax it. Here is the picture of that:

One of the plastice fender flares is cracked does any one know what it would cost (not a deal breaker) they tried to tape but didn't do to good. Picture:

If they gave me around $3500 for my camry (190,xxx, 4clyinder) then it would be good to go, cause then I could just get a loan (my credit score is in the mid to upper 700's). (I actaully have the money from student loans but I don't want to use because I'm moving at the end of this month and will need that for rent)

You'll love it if you get it. Fender flares are a little pricey because you'd probably have to get the whole set (new ones won't be faded). Unless you can find one at a junkyard. If your heart's not set on that truck, you might want to hold out for a '99 or newer, just to get one with an e-locker. But you'd probably be looking at about $11,000 or more.

They offered the elockers on 96-00's. The main benefit (in my opinion) of a 99 or 00 is the redesigned console/ cupholder area

Which the 96-98's could always bechanged to look like the 99-02's
I beleive ther is a write-up on that mod...
I am still confused.. Does the one he is looking at have a locker?
I don't remember reading it anywhere in the post...

As far as I remember it has no e-locker but that doesn't bother me. Isn't there a mod that you could do that anyways.

Good point. I hate the cup holder on the dash. I didn't know they had lockers on 96-98s.

I will be going again tommorrow to give it one final look over and to have it checked out by someone else. I went to a number of banks today to see if I would qualify for a loan and none of the banks will even give a loan for a vehicle that is over seven years old. WTF!!!! Has any one ever heard of this? If I do decided to get which I'm not sure yet I will have to go though the dealers finicaning.

This site has been more active than pirate 4x4 or even toyota-4runner.org and thanks guys for the help and advice.

When I look at it tommorrow again what should I look for (when I first looked at I checked the belts, the pwr windows and locks, moonroof, heat works fine but I didn't test the a/c)how should I test the 4wheel drive to make sure it's okay. When I looked at it the other day I just went to a gravel parking that had dips in it and snow and tried it there. What should I look for in the engine. (does it have a timing belt or chain), should I look for differintal leaks, what else.

Well, there is a bit of dilimea now. When I went today to look it over once more someone else was looking at it (I think the mom might buy it for her son who looks to be about 16). I took it out and had it looked over. The driver's door was replaced at one (no pinstipping on it and two lose bolts on it "needs to be tighten" and it needs a new battery).
Now the dilema that I have is should I go for it the trade in on my carmy would be about $3500 and I could probable get it for around $7,00 (7495) with about $500 down if needed. I would have to get financing though the dealer becuase the banks up here suck. I'm getting ready to graduate college and need away to get my crap home, while I search for an internship/fulltime job (I have to have one no matter what, otherwise to diploma for me).
I really don't know what to do. This just sucks that's all. What would you guys do if you were in my position? If I do decided to act on I'll have to go back tommorrow around 12:30 because that is when my last college class gets out and is when I could get my car appraised for trade-in. Oh, well it's now off to a study for one of my classes

If I had the money and was unstable, I would save my money for one later. That isn't the last one on Earth and that's how you have to look at it. However, if I felt that money wasn't going to be an issue, I'd jump on it in a heartbeat.

^ I agree. Keep looking. No sense going into debt over a vehicle in that kind of condition. Worn off paint, repainted door, missing pinstripe...no maintenance records (I assume). Keep looking.

Why not get a rig and have no car payment? Do the math and you'll see it's the right move. 4Runners will always be around.

Well, no 4runner for me.

I went down today to try and work out a deal with them and they wouldn't budge in price. I offer them $3500 for my trade-in and $7000 for the 4runner and they wouldn't take it. Granted they would give $3500 for my camry but they wanted the full price of 7495. I even offered 7200 and they still wouldn't take it. So I told the guy that it wasn't worth it and to let the lady who was also interested in it to give it to her.

Why in world wouldn't they deal in price in is what's gets me. Oh, well I just keeping enjoying my no-car payment and find some other way to get my stuff home from college.

Rentals are always good and aren;t that pricey last time I checked
(even though we have to 4Runners in are family, it took us two 4Runners, with Two trialers ::one rented, the other ours:: and still a fullsized truck to get all the stuff in out Virgina house up to our house in PA)
So yeah...
Don't have someone that could help you out thats near you?
