Smile Is this my clutch or transmission?

First off, thanks for all your help. Even though I just signed up, I have been coming here off and on for nearly 5 years, finding this forum through Google related searches.

Truck details: 1984 Toyota truck, 2WD, 5 speed, 22r

About a week ago my clutch peddle rapidly lost pressure and I had to push it into the floor in order to barely be able to shift gears. I noticed clutch fluid was nearly gone. So I refilled it and bled the fluid out and everything was good for a about 5 days of driving.

Then, while driving up a hill my truck maxed out at about 40 miles per hour and the harder I pushed the gas it would just rev up the engine and keep it at that speed. The next day I went out driving again and the same thing happened but it got progressively worse and my max speed decreased and finally it all together stop working. My truck will not move in any of the gears, it will just rev up like its in neutral.

I don't if I should put the effort into putting a new transmission in it, or look into the clutch first.

PS - I have done a lot of hauling in this truck over the last 4 years, so that would cause more ware than usual. Thanks again guys : )

clutch is shot.

this has nothing to do with clutch hydraulics.

if this were a "I cant change gears" question then you could speculate clutch hydraulic components, but thats not remotely the case.

Your clutch is shot. you need a new one and the flywheel turned especially. You've burnt it bad from the "read" of it. anytime the truck goes slow and the motor fast... when it shouldnt. the clutch and flywheel are slipping. which produces friction which produces heat which fries both.

i'm surprised elton is even giving the hydraulics a hint of doubt. if your motor is revving and the clutch pedal is out, and truck in gear... means the hydraulics have NOTHING to do with it.

A transmission failure would produce a description far remotely than you describe. When a Tranny goes it doesn't go progessively like you described. Either in gear or not going into gear, but theres no variable speeds. 1-5 gear is what it is. gears dont change ratios because they're old .. a clutch is like a brake pad. it wears out.. eventually it no longer grips.

X3 on the clutch. Go to Marlin, get their HD clutch package. It is a 1200 ft pd cluthc comapred to the stock 900 ft pd. As long as your tearing into the clutch. Replace the following as well: Rear main seal, Transmission output seal, Pilot Bearing, throwout bearing, fuel filter (if its a 22re, they are only accessable if you have the tranny away from the block). I would also go with a new flywheel, they are relatively cheap (100.00) vrs turning an old flywheel which will run you 45.00. The nice thing about having a new flywheel is the teeth are new and not worn, but mainly it is a quick swap (take out the old, put in the new). You don't have to stop what your doing, take the flywheel to the shop, wait for it to get turned and then hope not too much metal was taken off. I got a slightly heavier flywheel, it all depends on your preference. Don't forget to get new flywheel bolts as well. I also replaced my slave and master cylinders, my master was leaking but the slave was not yet I figured might as well since i'm in there. As long as you have the shifter out, you might as well order new seat and guide cap for you shifter. MArlin has all of these things and I was real happy with their quality.

Good luck

At the very least replace the bearings, Flywheel and clutch.

Thanks everyone for the input. I just got back from the auto store and bought a clutch kit for $85 and a new flywheel for $45 ($85, but $40 back when I return my old one). I had no idea how heavy those flywheels were, I had to carry it and the clutch kit a couple miles back to my house, lol.

Hopefully I will install it over the weekend. I will let you guys know how it goes!

That would be cool if I could find someone off of here. I am trying to get someone off of craigslist. The truck is stuck in front of my house, I have no garage or real work space or lifts. I would pay for someone to come over with lifts and swap it out with me. Can you think of any members that would be interested?

Well, it's done and everything is working great. I hired someone off Craigslist to come over with lifts and do it for me.

The clutch disk was completely worn down to the metal brackets. You can see a picture of it here: http://imgur.com/q5pjP.jpg

I can't believe I almost spent a couple hundred dollars for a transmission at a pull yard.

Thanks for everyones help, you saved me a lot of money and stress.

I'm having the same problem, Not so much the engine over revving but more of a throw out bearing and clutch wear problem. It stopped working yesterday. The drive has been pretty rough the past couple days. Started making a whining, squealing noise on idle but when i pushed the clutch in just a little, the noise would go away. As to the past two days, On idle it would be fine, hardly audible, but when i push the clutch in, then it made the noise, Kinda switched it up. Yesterday i went to put it in first Coming to a stop sign and it conked out. Couldn't shift into first, second, third, ext. Reverse just grind ed. So i turned it off and pulled the e brake .

I Also had to press the clutch all the way to the floor in order to shift. anyway,.... The shifter was in neutral but still stuck in gear. After i got it towed the guy said the clutch was bad, being that he could push the truck with little effort, while it was still in gear.

I did some looking on yotaTech and came down to getting a new clutch kit, All the bearings,And clutch workings for $131 at the auto parts store. Didn't pick up a flywheel yet though.

-Still doing some research into the slave and master cylinder though. What are there functions?

- I've also read about a rear Seal? Whats that about?

OOh yeah, after the clutch went, The clutch pedal was shaking violently back and forth. I'd press on it and it would just Shake. Any ideas?

Hey Lumpy, I'm going to be taking alot of pictures with this one. From start to finish.

When I had my problem with the clutch there was never any grinding or shaking of the clutch peddle, it just didn't engage in the gear a shifted into (the friction pad was just worn out). It sounds like you might need more or something else other than a new clutch kit, but I could be wrong.

What is the year and model of your truck?
