Hey everyone, what can I do to give me power to my 22re? I've heard of after market parts but what do I need?

 

A mild cam and headers would help. Open exhaust depending on where you live

 

Please search. This question get asked at least 3x a week...

 

You can polish a turd as much as you'd like, but it'll still be a turd. Headers, good exhaust, and a mild can (think engbldr or LCE) is all you can do. Even then, you'll likely be underpowered compared to a 3vze, and much more so compared to the 5vze.

 

this engine builds it`s power in the Head.

Since your asking your clueless Do lots of reading on here.

Over size valves, Cam , Port and polish , Header to 2.25 Exhaust pipe to a high flow cat and high flow muffler.

Then your going to most likely take out the bottom end .

So up graded head exhaust doing the bottom end lots of $$$$ for very little gain.

Gaining Horse Power in this engine is very expensive per horsepower.

Strip every once of weight you can out of the truck.

It is what it is.

 

pretty much sums it up. considering how much it'll cost to build up a 22re to squeeze a little more HP out, you may consider outright engine swap because it's almost cheaper at that point. even more so if you're looking to produce racing HP out of a 22re and get into forced induction, etc. otherwise, just appreciate the 22re for what it is - reliable and fairly simple, just enough power to move a properly geared rig - no more, no less. maybe make it a little happier with an exhaust so the sound changes and tricks your brain into thinking you have power?

Don't say I'm "clueless" or any other stupid ˟˟˟˟, like that. I'm only 15 when I wrote this post I didn't know that much about cars or truck. Don't say it through a computer or type it like you did. It's Belittling and that's all I'm gonna say

 

Well there young fella before you get bent out of shape, realize that any question you can even possibly fathom about a Toyota has most likely been answered on this forum. Especially a question of how much power can be squeezed from a 22re.

Spend some time searching before you ask such a common question and you will find all the answers you need and not get flamed.

The 22re is a great reliable engine but it never has and never will be a powerhouse.

If you're really serious about bumping up the power in your truck then start researching engine swaps.



On a side note, for as long as I've been into the old yotas I have never understood why people want them to go fast.

If you want power buy a V-8 or whatever. These trucks are slow and reliable. The engine doesn't have the power to break stuff unless you really try and thats the way I like it.

I could type out a long rebuttal, but it's not worth my time...

 

The good 'ol 22r/re motors pretty much can't make gobs of power. the money it would cost to get one to make oodles of HP just wouldn't be worth it. but where it DOES make lots of "power" is in it's reliability and simple design. these things are pretty much tractor engines that run on gas instead of diesel. it won't make a ton of power, but it will (pretty much) last forever. how many members here have over 400K on the clock and STILL keep rolling? need I say more? lol

 

You won't make your 22re noticeably faster without spending THOUSANDS of dollars on it. PERIOD.

 

But you can make it run forever.

 

I have a Built 22r and its not fast, Ive done the cam, Intake, Headers, the high flow cat and 2 1/4 exhaust, mine isnt fuel injected but i have a weber carb and still it isnt powerful. What it can do is last a long time with relatively little maintenance ,start up reliably and turn the wheels. Depending on what youre trying to do with it, you might want to leave a good running 22 engine alone and think about differential gears. Do a search, read about different differential gears vs tire size and driving habbits like street, trail or highway. If you hit a snag and cant wrap your head around some idea you come across, come back here, show us what you are lookin at and im sure we can clear it all up without belittling you.
If you are rich and bored then yea you can turbo or supercharge these motors, Polish, port, shave, lighten and balance everything in the engine, but youre talkin thousands of dollars for a less than 200hp engine.

THIS LINK is the most comprehensive 22R-series "power gain" discussion I have seen so far. If I'm reading things correctly, this is by the guy who started engnbldr - he knows everything about these motors and can extract as much power out of them as is reasonable. But the other comments are right: you're going to spend a lot to get not a lot.

By the time you drop big bucks into a 22RE rebuild, you could have gotten into a 2RZ or 3RZ which adds almost 50% horsepower of the 22RE stock vs stock. And then when you want yet another 50% boost you have off-the-shelf supercharger options for about $1k. I'm ballparking those numbers, because that is the general theme I have come across in my own reading. I used to think that once I got the bugs worked out of my 4Runner that I would find a core 22RE and rebuild it in the basement with the boy so we could learn motors and have a nice peppy power plant to swap in someday. Now I think I'll slowly gather for a 2RZ swap instead.

 

^^ get a 3RZ. It makes more usable power throughout the RPM band.

 

Well, seeing that he's 15... this is probably a hand-me-down vehicle from a relative. He probably wanted some sporty car but got stuck with a 20 year old 4 banger. People think they are like Honda Civics or something... just put on some annoying muffler and a few tricks and they are happy.

My truck started out that way, I got it from my dad during college. But at least I knew with a V6 I had a little more hope for some HP and achieved it with little cost to me. But I had a goal in mind, being able to climb I-80 and Highway 50 without having to sit in the slow lane with my flashers on
