making my 22re faster

I have an 89 pickup with a 4cyl 22re. My top speed is about 70 on a good day, and I was wondering if there is anything I can do to make it a little faster. Anything helps!

Headers, cat-back exhaust (or full exhaust if you remove cat), K&N air filter, ISR mod...some basic stuff.

Or 2JZ-GTE swap and do some 4WD burnouts

Nothing is going to make anything with a 22RE or 3VZ-E "fast". Shouldn't need to go over 70 mph anyway...

There are things to help it. Driving with a tail wind. LOL.
It is a 22re, never had a lot of horsepower. You can do the AFM swap, header, a small cam. All depends on your tire size, gearing, good tune-up. It will never be a speed demon but you can help it out. If you have a lot of miles on it, it may need a rebuild. That would be a good time to do some head work and cam.
All depends on you I guess. Good luck

I can reach up to 80 pretty easy on the freeway, my 22re is all stock except for a cam.

You could also take any unnecessary weight out of the truck. It might help a bit.

My turbo 22R could do 90 with an automatic.

Stepping down to a shorter gear (4.30->4.56, or 4.10->4.30) would help assuming you don't mind spinning the motor a little faster.

If you're running an auto, a manual transmisison will get you some more out of that too.

Can you give a few more details like mileage and maybe tire size and gearing.

I have an '85 xtra cab with 35" MTR's and 5:29's with a completely stock 22re engine.

I can hit 70 easy. Fastest I've been is 80 and I had power to spare. If your truck is stock it sounds like the engine is just worn out.

87 4Runner/22RE/SR5(5spd) Does 90 mph(85mph with the AC on) Hwy without high head winds! haha...

Stock Air intake w/Toyota Filter, 261 CAM and some other mild head work, 4.30 Gears with 31x10.50's with 2.5" lift, STOCK exhaust at the moment---could do 92mph with the header and 2.25" exhaust, but off the line is better with the Stock Tri/Y cast-factory manifold into 2" and 2.25" after muffler. (Verified Speed with GPS)

My first recommendation would be CAM/LEAVE THE 4.10'S if stock tires/clean up the Throttle body and intake/... BUT, if the motor is fairly tired... I'd hold off on the CAM and wait til you rebuild.

When my 86 22RE automatic was 10 years old and had 68,000 I could get to 90, but it took me forever. That was on 225 Desert Duelers. I did a little better with aluminum rims and passive tread tires-Goodyear Eagles designed for Lincolns and Caddys.

My suggestions-aluminum rims and keep it tuned up.

As said before K&N, headers, your choice of high flowing muffler, and a hotter cam. The 22R doesn't make lots of power, but you can help wake it up a bit. You could also do a turbo if you have lots of money that you have nothing better to spend it on.

when my truck had the stock 22re with 263k miles i drove it 6 hrs each way to pick up my 450 yz at 80 mph, except the bigger hills.
it had a cold air intake, Downey header and 2.5" exhaust,
pulling 31's.

the 22re is no speed demon but it should do fine if you are not in a hurry.
have you checked the valve clearance and tuned it up ever?

X2 intake, headers, catback, also gears as said, nothing big(22rte$) to be done,a bunch of little things and every bit helps. I top out at 80ish on 33"s n 4.88 3200rpm but its comfotable at 70mph... Dually i like the stacks, 22re warp speed go cart, stickers add 10hp n flames add 20!

in all seriousness gears and tires and transmission will have a lot to do with how your truck feels and performs on the highway

We need to know what combination you're running. I mean, if you have 33s with factory 4.10 gears, then that's the problem. But we don't know since you didn't post details about your rig.
