^ But that's not a 22re! You've got the 3RZ!

My old 22r with 318,xxx miles does ok with 33s & 4.88. She's not quick but keeps up with traffic fine at ~70 mph.

Agree, an all-stock 22RE in good condition is able to go faster than 70 on a level freeway. Look at the basics before doing the upgrades.

18mpg at 80+mph, and 19-22mpg at 75mph or less, depending on terrain(hills, flat, etc). It's actually fairly consistent in regards to mileage, I am very happy with the factory option 3RZ....

Mild Upgrades

Running stock gearing on a 94' 22re 4runner 5spd, has 278k on it. LCE header and new cat really helped. K & N filter gave it a little more power, got the LCE crossover tube for airflow, kept the airbox so it draws cooler air instead of an open filter in the engine bay. Valve clearance was mentioned, agreed. Basics always before mods.

I just wanna put this out there, I removed my aftermarket exhaust and header and went back to all stock and I have noticed no difference.

I still have just as much get up and go and now it isn't so obnoxiously loud. My mileage has slightly increased also.

My engine is fairly new, only about 20k or so on it though.

I guess you could say that. I bought this engine for my old 4runner in '07 and figured I'd just throw on a nice exhaust set up. Guess I didn't need to, but damn that header sure is purdy.

I have an '85 xtra cab with 35" MTR's and 5:29's with a completely stock 22re engine.

I can hit 70 easy. Fastest I've been is 80 and I had power to spare. If your truck is stock it sounds like the engine is just worn out.
it has 33x12.5 swampers with a 4 inch lift not sure on mileage or gearing

Make sure you have enough gear for the tires you are running.

LCE header and 2.25" exhaust throughout with a free flow cat and performance muffler of your choice will make the most difference.

Anything beyond that...Expect to spend some serious coin to build a motor that will never exceed 300hp.

Hey Bob, how you been?

Ya know, I guess people find different results... I actually don't feel much of a difference at all, other than VERY top speed(maybe 2-4MPH depending).... with the Stock Exhaust and 2" to CAT and then 2.25" to the Muffler and then 2.25" out the back.... Compared to my LCE and 2.25" Exhaust that I had. In fact, I feel a lil more low end torque with the stock tri-y cast mani. Seems to have that lil more backpressure it needs. Anyway, I still plan on putting my LCE back on, but with 2" to the CAT and THEN 2.25" out the back.. Plus, I'll have my 02 Bung welded onto the Header Collector, WAY closer where my 87 was factory... (which is on the mani before collector on the stock Manifold).

THAT HEADER DID sound sick though,...gotta say! hahaha. I think when I add that lil backpressure back, along with letting it flow out of the head a lil better...it'll make a difference that I can notice again. Giving me low end torque and a lil better top end, that's the goal.

Also.... again, I hear that alot..and I'm not doubting what people say.. But my 261 CAM WAS BY FAR the best power gain that I added. RIGHT OFF THE BAT I gained almost a gear on the hills I normally had to push it up in 3rd on, which now I could do at 4th and even 5th. Adding the 4.30 Gears to that, on 31's, rather than 4.10's? EVEN BETTER! The header and CAI? Just didn't FEEL IT, ..but sure heard it.

Not EVEY trying to argue, Bob, lol.... Just sharing my personal experience. Seems they range WIDELY in ''things noticed" upon installing/using, ya know?

4in lift on 33s is why you can only do about 70, your prob on stock gearing, regear to 4.88s if cash allows, or return your truck to stock, or as EVERYONE and there grandma has said, header, intake, cam, etc etc

My 22re has 151k original miles on it with an a340h auto tranny and 4.30 gears. its a POS slug to be honest..i drop down to 45mph in no time on the slightest incline on the highway while cars are zooming past me at 75mph easy.

5 speed w56 swap coming soon..

wow! that mileage is incredible, 22re, 4.11, 175k pullin 32s only gets about 14mpg on a good day, only mod is a header, and custom 2'' duals! I'm hoping I'm not the only one here with crap mileage!? But it can do 85... didnt wanna push any faster with a bad pitman.

I feel ya vang530, my truck will fly onoce you get it wound up on flat land but the first sign of a hill longer than a speed bump when going 60 or less, and its time to downshift!

A 20+ year old tired motor will run as such. Tune up, rebuild, motor swap or drive downhill.

Putting header etc on a tired motor is like putting a milk bucket under a bull.
