Lost Keys

Man, I'm an idiot--I lost my only truck key. Yeah, I had lost my spare before. *Sigh* Can I get a new one cut from the dealer? Any idea how much $? Thanks.

take your registration or pink slip / owner's certificate to the dealer to prove you own the truck and they should be able cut new keys
I had to do that with my 91 and it was 10 bucks for two keys.

kind of difficult to get the lock out if you can't open the door...

I had the dealer cut me new keys... They don't work to well on the door locks though, I can use the new keys on the drivers side most of the time.

the dealer can cut a new key for $11, or you can go to a locksmith after you get the key code for your truck from a dealer and have them cut you a key. Ive had to do both before.

might try some lock lubricant in the lock cylinders. my 91 had a problem like that where we'd have to wiggle the key to get it to turn but a squirt of lube in there every morning for a few days got it loose again

The dealer cut me a key for $4 and change after I gave my VIN. As said above, the key does not work well in my doors either, but seems to be getting better.

Rant

i called the dealer where I live and there computer only goes back to 1990 i lost my only key to my 88....need to find some one with the correct info... so it sounds like if i get a key cylinder out of one of the doors or truck i can get the #'s off that and have a key made? Assuming they are both still correct (door cylinder and ignition cylinder) and not changed after all these yeas by a previous owner.

I do recall how old and rounded my key looked before I lost it so i went to walmart bought all 5 key blanks for toyota they had like 1.25 a piece, found the one that slides into the ignition and and some files......someone stop me b4 i start if this is an dumbass idea. I am going to attempt to recreate the old rounded key..... I had a buddy in HS with a 80's truck and he could uses any key it seemed like. Would i be better off file the key or lock cylinder? I suspect the key. I found a pic online of an old worn one. A call to a lock smith might in order before I start.

In the mean time is there a way to "hot wire" my igniting to start the truck so I can continue to sort out my 3.4 swap wiring?

Its OK if the steering wheel remains locked for now if it makes it any simpler...

seems a logical choice, most toyota keys for these generations wear down to the point of being interchangeable with one another. if you have a buddy with a yota key i'd have him try it first, that way if it works your rig is unlocked and you have basis for filing down the blank to make a new one.

also if anyones keys dont want to operate smoothly in the door locks (or the ignition) you can lube the cylinder with wd-40 or di-electric lube spray (available at auto parts stores)

pull the plastic and see if on the back side of the ignition is a set of wires, that peice might be held on with screws, if so pull that and u should be able to use a flat blade and turn it and u will get power. as for the key try and look for a code on the locks or ignition and see if the dealer can cut one off a code if not then take it to a lock smith and have them do it,

Remove cylinder. Take to locksmith. Rebuild and make new keys. Pay him $20. Put up spare key.

Solved

I removed the passenger door lock cylinder (took 10 min) and took it to the lock smith. He made me 2 keys for $12, took 10 min. Apparently the passenger door is the only side that has the key code stamped into it.

I feel like an idiot for dicking with it for so long! Back to the 3.4 swap, thanks guys!

I dont have to worry about keys, any Toyota or Nissan key will open my doors and a screwdriver will turn the ignition
