Loss of Engine Electronics

This past summer, I had been running a 88 4runner v6 manual at 50 mph for 10 miles. Air temp 70F. I pulled in to the grocery for about 10 min. Car started right up, but when trying to get out of the lot, I had to wait for a car making repeated attemts to insert itself into a parking spot. About 60 sec. idling in neutral.
Then the engine abruptly died. When I turned the key...nothing.
I was on a slight slope, so I was able to coast backwards into a parking spot, where I tried the key again, and it started, (time since stalling, about 20 sec) and has not done to me again.
In spite of this, I don't really trust this car now.
Does someone out there know what would take both spark and starting circuits out?
I wish I could tell you about engine temp, but that gauge doesn't work.
Thanks.

Check all of your connections like battery, alternator, starter and your grounds. Something may be loose or your alternator is going bad.

Why would you think that the "spark circuit" went out ?
From your description it sounds as though it simply wouldn't turn over when you tried to start it.
That means there was, most likely, a problem with the battery and/or starter, either the parts themselves and/or the wiring to them.
If it's the battery then the alternator could be involved also.

I've been having a similar problem. Keep an eye on this thread,

I would start by checking the VAFM.

Does it sputter or run rough before it dies or does it just instantly shut off?

FredTJ; The engine died when idling.
Neoworm0; Thanks for the link. When the engine died, it did not sputter. One second it was purring contendedly, then dead.

Try checking your EFI relay and COR relay. Seems to be what was happening with mine.
