Then look for a '99-'00 since those old style cupholders will be hated the first time the cup flies off the dash. Also the auto up/down windows and multi power outlets do come in handy.

Seriously tho',just look for a deal and something you'll be happy paying for;don't settle for a so-so truck.

 

yeah, i'll keep looking. i'm looking at pathfinders too though, so i may end up leaving this forum (and i haven't found a particularly good-looking pathfinder forum yet).

you guys crack me up with the cup-holder fetish. i never find myself drinking out of a cup while i drive, so i could really care less. yet it seems to be such a big deal to so many other people (apparently that's a problem with my '93 legend as well - crappy cupholders, or maybe even complete lack of - can't picture any right now).

 

The cupholder thing sounds strange, I agree. But you really have to experience it to know what we are talking about. The stupid thing rattles, blocks the view to the clock, prevents access to the fan, AC button and other vent controls, holds your hot cup of Starbucks at a 20 degree angle causing it to "burp" and splatter Carmel Macchiato all over the dash and carpet; and for us 5-speed guys causes us to smash it with our hand after a shift as we reach up to flip the visor down or whatever.

Man, some Japanese design engineer really screwed that one up!

 

i'm sure the pre-99 cupholders really do suck, i'm not denying that. all i'm saying is that that means nothing to me since i, literally, never drink out of a cup while i'm driving.

perhaps it's a fast food thing - and since i don't eat meat and generally eat healthy foods, i don't frequent fast food places too often (just the occasion order of french fries). and on top of that i don't drink soda.

if i drink and drive, it's straight out of the bottle (as in a plastic water bottle).

Sorry you lost what was comming up as a great deal, but that happens. Keep hunting, you will find a good one out there yet.

The old cup holders were an after thought in the pre-99's. Normally the accesories in Toyota's are well thought out for ease of use and design.

Deffinately Yes on your first statement,

The reason you don't want a nissan I was reading your other thread and I see that you were asking about exaust gas comming in the back because of the dogs, That won't be happening on a 4Runner. Also if you ever want to do some camping you will find the Toyota has a better list of features that will allow you to camp. The rugged good looks of a toyota. Plus the better over all ability to be able to go off roading without any modifications. Just pull of road and go. The simplest thing you can do to as toyota to improve off roading would be tires. Also there is a manufacture of a product that allows you to cover the rear of your carpeted area with a canvis like product for your boys to ride back there. One last item, and one very importain item. The cargo hook tie downs for your animals.... You don't want them sliding around in case of an accident.

Once you get a little 4x4ing under your belt you will wonder why you haven't done this before. You get out of town take the wife and the dogs and go with some friends.... Probally someone from this site will take you out sometime and show you how much fun you can have outside the city, the peace and quiet of setting around a camp fire at night sharing some good conservation and smoores under a full moon will help you unload some of that BS that fills you up durning the week. You will find that the endorfins you get from a relaxing weekend to be almost as good from a good weight lifting session......TJ

Christian - that does look like fun, though I've seen the video before - I came across it a few days ago while reading through older threads.

i'm still wavering though. i owned a 76 blazer w/6" lift (even pulled out the crappy blocks in the rear and did my own shackle flip - my biggest car mod ever) and 35" tires for about 2 years and never took her off-roading. i was too concerned about breaking something. plus i don't know anywhere to go in my area.

if it's just the off-roading benefit i'm not sure if i should go with the 4runner.

ive recently been looking for a my truck ive own a 82 and two 86 pickups and was looking at dodges and chevys n there was a couple toyotas but after a week i decided on the tacoma for gas mileage and i no its dependable i dont was the tranny problems dodge has lol but i got a 97 tacoma 2.7l with 5sp n 4x4 for 5800 with trade the wanted atlmost 7k for it but he said 6k with trade n i got him from 5800

 

I don't think Nissan's are bad vehicles, they seem to put good drive-trains in the newer ones...That being said, I chose a Toyota for the superior engineering, reliability, resale value, off-road capability, ease of working on and tasteful design. I think a lot of the Nissan's are kind of over stylish for their own good, the body lines just blend better on the Taco's and 4Runners.

 

Some other differences between the 98 and 99-00's:

(Besides the cupholder issues)
1. 99-00's have heated mirrors std on limiteds (i believe opt on SR5's)
2. 98's are usually a little cheaper than 99's or 00's for practically the same vehicle.

I was in your same boat, I ended up getting a 98 Ltd after looking at some 99's, an xterra, a pathfinder and its infinity brother. I'm still happy with my decision to get the 98 too.

 

Before I got my 4runner I was orginally looking at buying a 97 pathfinder that was in great shape and had all the maintance records. However, I ended up going with the toyota. Just because it felt like a more stable vehicle and I like the looks better (inside and out). If I couldn't have gotten my 4runner I probable would've gotten the pathfinder.
