Locker questions

When it comes to locker's why does it seem that they will only fit behind a four cylinder or v6 but not both. If both have the toy 8" rearend or SAS front axle, wouldn't the locker fit in either. Same axle and set up, right? I am real new, and this seems odd to me.

What kind of lockers are you talking about? The spider assemblies is the biggest difference, so that's why lunchbox lockers have different 4cyl and V6 models. Most "full" lockers (Detroit, ARB, etc) can be used in either. The entire thirdmember assembly is interchangeable, so V6 thirds work in 4 cyl trucks and vice-versa, so for example a Toyota elocker will work in both.

Just need different bearings. Most now sell the kit with 6cyl bearings, so if you have 4cyl, you have to get different ones.

Ok

Ok so if I were looking at a used lockrite locker from an 86 toyota rear end, I could realistically put it in either a front 85 axle or a rear 95 axle, correct?

Lockrite is a lunchbox - so year-wise you could use it in either, but they both have to be 4 cylinder...

Depends - where do you live? Ever drive on snowy roads? Anyone else ever drive your truck?

Question 2wd Locker?

I have a 98 Tacoma 2wd with the 2.4 four cylinder and I am looking to put a locker into it, I can’t figure out if it’s the same as the 4wd locker or not. I would prefer to put a lockright into it. Could anyone could help me out?

Different Detroit's

If i get alocker for a toyta 8" with 4.88's (95 runner 3.0 v6) and then I decide to get 5.29 gears, will i have to buy a new locker or can I use the old one?

All Toyota diffs are "one carrier for all sizes" - there's no split like in Dana axles

I have the factory 4.88's. Is this true for that carrier as well? If I were to buy a rear diff. with the e-locker could I swap my 4.88's into it?

The CARRIER is the same, but the pinion is offset, so your factory 4.88 gears will only work in the special 4.88 thirdmember.

Your lockright from a stock 4.88 (offset pinion) V6 will work just fine when you go 5.29, but....factory 4.88s CAN'T ever be changed to anything except factory 4.88s! Your 3rd member housing features an off-set pinion.

So you will be able to MOVE your lockright from the factory 4.88 to the new NON-FACTORY 4.88 V6 3rd member you re-gear to 5.29.

more questions

I don't have a locker right now. I was just wondering which was best. With stock 4.88's, if i were to get a detroit locker for the rear and then later on decide to regear to 5.29's, would I be able to re-use the detroit or would I have to buy a new one. I'm just not sure if I should buy a locker now or when I regear. (regearing is about a year away for both axles)

Leiniesred answered that question. The answer is yes, you can re use the detroit. You cannot use the third member.

So, if you buy a detroit now, and put it into your factory 4.88 set up, you can do that. Then, when you regear, you must buy a DIFFERENT third member, buy 5.29 gears, and reuse your detroit locker. The locker is the same for all, the gears and third are different.
