knock sensor

Could a bad knock sensor on a 22re cause pinging? Also how do I test the knock sensor in order to find out if its bad?

i dont think so, I think when the sensor is bad it will retard the timing to not ping. the cables usually go bad. pull your codes and it will tell you if there is a knock sensor.

check your timing to see if that is causing your pinging.

Can't help you much other than to say that mine does the exact same thing, pings and jumps about 5 deg. I leave it under 0 deg btdc and it still pings but not as bad. I believe code 52 is the knock sensor code. (although i do not get a code 52)

52 is knock sensor. could be the wires, the sensor or the ECM.

A bad knock sensor wouldn't cause the pinging, it would just allow the engine to ping or "spark knock".

Have you changed the plugs, wires, cap, rotor? use some kind of injector cleaner to clear up carbon?is your timing set correctly? have you tried higher octane gasoline?

possibly. Run some SeaFoam injector cleaner or similar product and see what happens. You could have carbon deposits inside the cylinders retaining heat causing the pinging.
