Just starting out...1988 4x4 EFI

so. I just got a hold of this truck for free. At least, it's an optional vehicle for me to fix up. I need it to be useable fast. I'm trying to move, and I don't have a job at the moment. I've got about 1000 dollars to put into this truck...that's it.

It's been sitting for about 2 years without being started. I bought a new battery for it, and put some gas into it, probably a gallon and a half. I went to start it up, and it..didn't turn over. It tried real hard but it never turned over. I'm pretty sure it's a v6. Manual 5 spd.

Anyway. can anyone give me a list of the stuff I need to do to this truck that's been sitting for two years? I'm...very very very new to working on my own cars. I know what spark plugs are...no idea how to check them. Assume I don't own any auto tools, save for a ratchet and some sockets lol. Real basics. so anything I need to get. Anything I need to replace. The overall tune up to get it going and driving.

Get a haynes manuel from your autoparts store first. Get a basic craftsman, mac, snapon, ect tool set of wrenches, sockets, screw drivers ect. You will need a spark plug socket. Replace the spark plugs, cap, rotor. Change the oil, and filter. Make sure the air filter isn't plugged. Find out why it was parked. Change the fuel filter and drain the fuel. Toyota's have drain plugs in the tanks bottom side under the skid plate. Ask lots of questions as you come up with them. YOU SHOULD COME UP WITH SOME if you have never worked on a car before.

Again, thank you.

make sure all of your grounds are good..and the battery has a full charge on it

when you said you got a new battery for it..i assume you charged it..LOL..if you did then you probably have a bad ground sometime..therefore that could be your 'trying to start' issue..

basic tune up..oil change..and she should be ready to go..if you got the money go ahead and change all the fluids.

I've discovered upon closer inspection it is a 22re, if that makes any difference in anything.

Big difference, 22re is pretty much the easiest engine in existence to work on

Lol well I'm his Son-In-Law. And he doesn't have the time to fix it. Sometimes, you just get lucky. lol I'm glad this is the easiest engine in the world, because it will be a good change. My last car was a Pontiac Grand Am. I think that was the hardest thing to work on. Even for the pros. It took an hour longer then any other car for them to do ANYTHING. Even changing the spark plugs took longer then a normal car.

Whoever invented the sideways mounted motor should be shot. Anyway. Thanks for all the help guys. I am going out and getting everything I need tomorrow.

There is also apparently a tooth chipped out of one of the spider gears in the rear end? Father-in-law mentioned it yesterday. But he said it never caused to much of a problem. What can that do to this truck, and how much can that cost to fix it?

Hey, not too bad! No body rot that I can see, and take a Dirt Devil to the interior and you'll be suprised how nice it turns out! It also looks like aftermarket wheels (American Racing?) and steering wheel. Unless you absolutely need them, I'd take that ugly rack and tool box off the back. How many miles?

Miles, I'm not for sure. I haven't checked. I just pushed it out of the woods today, and dropped the skid panel so I can drain the gas. Started work on the spark plugs...got everything plugged into the new distributor cap...I did it all in the dark too lol. That was fun...Somehow I was dumb enough to let the skid panel fall onto me....o.O I tried to think ahead, and removed all but the middle screws on both ends...anyway. the moment i got one side off, the other side slipped out, knocked my flashlight out of my hand, and there i was....alone. Under a truck. Skid panel conviently wedged between my gut and...well I couldn't see. Something else. Probably the axle or whatever. >.<

I was thinking about taking the rack off...maybe putting a new one on later. And as for the tool box...I don't mind it, but I prefer the ones that go across under the tailgate window....Not sure what kinda wheels they are. Don't know much about it. It was sitting because my father-in-law got a mustang, and he couldn't afford the reg. on both vehicles. (why he didn't just...sell the p.o.s. mustang I'll never know.)

Dude you scored for free. A little bit of elbow grease and you should have a nice little truck. P.S working in the daytime or in a garage with lights usually helps. LOL been there done that before. If you need more help just ask. Also when you take things apart put all the bolts and nuts into plastic zip lock ect style of bags with a piece of paper indicating where they are from. This way you can take stuff apart without getting confused as to what goes where when it is time to reassemble.

....It would be a score if I could get it to start. I replaced the spark plugs and wires. The distributor cap, and the rotor. I also drained all the old gas and replaced it with some new gas...I've replaced the battery...the clamps are a little crappy, so I probably need to replace those but is there anything else I can do?
it cranks but won't turn over.

Have you checked to make sure your getting spark? Pull off one of the plug wire boots and set it against the body of the truck, then crank the engine. You should be able to see and hear it arcing onto the body, if not maybe replace the coil.
