jumping speedo needle

hello all!! first post on here and thanks to all who may be able to give some advice..

i have an 89 pickup that im currently building a flat deck for..

so while its off the road figured i would fix some other problems..

so replacing the whole antenna and cable.. as well as radio..

so while the dash is apart i want to tend to that speedo needle that jumps all over and makes a horrible screech sound when its real cold out..

has anyone experienced this before.. will some lube on the cable take care of it or will i need a new cable fix it?? i only want to pull the dash apart once to do radio and this but do not want to leave it all apart if i will def need a new cable.. thanks for any advice you can lend..

Welcome to YT.

I would try the cleaning and lube it 1st. It's not terrible to remove and you don't have to remove the dash. Just the cluster and some under dash parts. I would take out the whole cable, wipe it clean, spray out the housing with a spray cleaner, maybe even degreaser, and re-lube everything, stick it back in. Or just replace the whole thing.... The search function will work tremendously for you.

I had a jumping speedo issue as well. Even with lubrication, it ended up failing. I bought a new one and the speedo-meter is smooth-as-silk.

I went OEM. I bought it at toyotapartszone.com.

If you do end up lubricating it use graphite. I did this and never had any issues since.
