Instrument Cluster Bulb Replacement

Greetings,

1 of the 194 bulb's, behind the instrument cluster keeps going out randomly. I think that it is a faulty bulb and I went to Toyota to get a replacement and they wanted 8.00 per bulb. Is this 194 bulb standard, or is there something special about the Toyota specific one? My cluster has the white background with red/orange illumination (stock on 2001-2004). Does the instrument cluster panel what turns it red, or is it a "condom" over the bulb?

If I can just buy the replacement bulbs from Autozone, Napa, etc... it would be a lot cheaper than using Toyota.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, the bulb is a standard 194. You can pick them up at most parts stores. The little rubber covering on the bulb might be a little hard to get off, but you should be alright.

when I tried taking my light condoms off my bulbs, well, they did not come off in one piece. SO when they went back in, well, I just put them in without them. Granted it changes the color of the gauge lights. BTW: those light condoms are somewhat hard to find. At least around here.

haha yup, and unlike the real world, the condoms don't protect the light, they actually hurt the life of them.

Anyone know the size bulb for the indicator lights at the bottom of the instrument cluster? (The 4WD indicator, Cruise Control, etc.) They are not 74's! The 74's are too fat!

I think they are all 74's? if they are too big then I don't know what is supposed to go in there....

check out www.superbrightleds.com if you haven't already, they have awesome stuff, I'm about to swap in LED's for all my instrument cluster.

does anyone know exactly how many bulbs are in the instrument cluster?? (194's/74's or whatever the size is?)

might be different if you have or do not have a 4runner/pickup and/or sr5 package etc etc,

some had/did not have :

low fuel level light, check engine light, back door light probably others but those come to mind

In my case I do not have either 3 of those.

Thanks swimmerboy! I knew someone had to know this... just need to figure out how many I need to order...

just can't decide if I want to stick with green like I have or go with some blue ones...

I was reading on here somewhere that we should use the 120 degree angle bulbs for the backlights, anyone confirm/deny that one?

Order the 5 way LEDs for the 194's and the 1 way for the 74's. Here's my blue cluster.

This is a bad pic but you get the idea, it was light out.

nice, thanks for posting that up. almost ready to put my order together for all the LED's... anyone use the 1156 replacement for better stock backup lights? curious as to how bright they are, my guess is roughly the same or less but whiter light?

happy new year!

Got'em, I have a T100 and they must be different the 74s are too large, however, good news, they are 2721's in the T100. I haven't been able to find the cover's anywhere except Autozone. Any leads on the internet for them?
