I'm thinking about towing a small trailer with my '91 22re 4runner 4x4 5spd and don't know anything about re gearing. If I were to purchase a ring and pinion for the rear (and put in new bearings) would it also be a good idea to re gear the front diff also? Do they need to match in terms of gearing?

Also if someone has a link to the stock gearing info, I'd really appreciate it. I thought I read that the stock gearing for a 22re 5spd is less than 4.10 but I don't know for sure.

410s is stock usually with a 5sp 22re. do you like 4wd if so gotta regear

if youre looking just to tow i got a factory 488 diff im selling, way easier and cheaper than buying the gears and setting them up

 

I don't know what you mean by "less", but if it didn't come with the opt. 31" tire package, it had nothing less or more than 4.10. If it did come with that package, it's got 4.56. And, like he says, do you want to use 4WD? Then yes, they need to match perfectly(or very close to it). Or you'd need to run different size tires fr/rr to simulate the gears matching.

No you really don`t have to regear in the front after all it is your vehicle.

It would be a real good idea though depending on your use of 4 wheel drive.

If your the type to just engage the hubs and transfer case into 4 Hi or 4 Low for only the minute or two to get unstuck.

Knowing full well your going to have a huge amount torque bind from the drive shafts turning at different speeds . you can sit down and do the numbers.

Yes it was a royal pain at times to get things unlocked.

Years ago because of being a poor teenager I ran a Chevy K20 for the better part of two winters in this condition.

Looking back it is not something i would want to do again.

 

Yes the gears need to be the same. Binding the drive train with different gears is not a good thing. If you don't break something you will be wearing it out very fast.

 

Meh... i ran a 4.88 up front, and 4.30 rear for over a year. As long as you are on a slippery surface, the drive line shouldnt bind. BUT... get on some hardpack gravel, or tar, and you will ruin your transfer!

Is it a good idea to regear the front to match the rear? Absolutely!

Is it entirely necessary? Well that depends on ur driving style, surface conditions, and understanding of how the drive system works.... The fact that u had to ask this question in the 1st place indicates you should regear the front to match the rear.

You could have just googled this. Not trying to say its a bad question, but its definitely an obvious answer. Of coarse you do. Thats why they match from the factory. You wouldnt put different sized tires all around your 4wd would ya? Well maybe you would

Do you mix match your shoes? Different shoe on each of your 3 feet?
