If you know the answer: 3VZ-E engines have 6 bolt flywheels, while most had 8 bolt fl
Why did some 3VZ-E engines have 6 bolt flywheels, while most had 8 bolt flywheels.
At first I thought it was just the manual trans had 6 bolt flywheel
And autos had 8 bolt flex. But did some searching, and I can't actually find any flywheels with 6 bolts for the 3VZ-E.
Recently did the clutch in my 89 Pickup 3.0 with a manual trans. It has a 6 bolt fly wheel. I can't figure out why some would and some wouldn't. Only thing I could find was this.

I am not in a predicament where I need this info. But I know some on this form are. And its really bugging me. Anybody??

I'll ashamedly admit I was not aware of this. Although it appears to be true. Some are 8 bolt and some are 6 bolt. But the 93 FSM shows the A/T drive plate with 6 bolt holes, and the M/T flywheel with 8 bolt holes. Which seems logical, considering the weight difference of the parts being bolted on, drive plate(flex plate) vs. flywheel + clutch disc + clutch cover. Unless the bolts are bigger when there's only 6?

I had no idea that all 3VZ-Es didn't have 8 bolt flywheels/flex plates. Even though there it was in the FSM plain as day. My 88 M/T has an 8 bolt flywheel, I know that much for sure.
So yeah, how do you swap an automatic transmission for a manual, or vice versa, if you can't find a flywheel, or flex plate, with the right amount of bolt holes to match your crankshaft?
BTW...
Where'd you get that pic? Somebody actually makes light weight 6 bolt flywheels for this engine?
EDIT: Here's an 88-95 3VZ-E flex plate that has 8 holes. I can't seem to find any with 6 holes, but there should be...right?

O.k., I found one, also for an 88-95 3VZ-E.

So where are all the 6 bolt hole flywheels for the 3VZ-E then?

I am surprised you were able to find a six bolt flex. I couldn't find any of those.
Starting to wonder if toyota shared 22re flywheels on some 3vz engines for some reseon.

Dont think you are going to get a straight answer from anyone unless some Toyota Engineer from the 80's chimes in. Napa has them both listed for the 3vze 4x4 also, so maybe it was just some weird Cali vs 49 state thing or not, who knows.

i am in the middle of a engine swap right now. pulled the 3.0 engine from my 90 truck 5spd and put into a 93 4runner automatic. i had my fingers crossed when i lifted the motors out. both 8 bolt flywheels. i know the 6 bolt was brought up in one of my prevouse post.
BUT, i am not sure the exact year of the engine that was in my 90 pickup. i know the history of the truck and the engine was replaced a few years back.
when i got the truck it had 1989 sparkplug wires and a two wheel drive oil pan on it. and it ran awfull. lack of maintenace. original wires to engine ? unknown. but i am hopeing they where and this is a low milage engine. and yes the front pig was removed from pickup and i had to put the correct oil pan on to get the pig back in.
i will be pulling the dead engine from my 93 pickup in the future.

Glad yours didn't. That would have sucked.

Think this has anything to do with the fact that 88-89 3vz's were noticeabley peppy'r than 90-95 3vz's? Maybe?? That and the fuel injector difference of coarse. Ive noticed the difference myself in a few instances between friends trucks and my own. And a lighter flywheel would make a difference. Just a little more power in the 88-89's, no mods.
