I need a stock 'push-pull' steering arm!

Hi all, I'm new to the site but not entirely new to the 4x4 world. I recently acquired a 1984 Toyota 4x4. It originally had a 6" suspension lift, 3" body lift, and 40" tires, with 5.13 gears to turn them.

I have recently put new 3" springs all around with some 33" tires, and the 'get up and go' factor is back.. however I'm stuck trying to fix the steering now. The previous owner left the stock push-pull draglink setup, just used a big drop steering arm.. After speaking with a couple companies I've been told there is no aftermarket option for the stock steering arm, and getting one from Toyota is a joke. There aren't any junkyards even remotely close to me, so, my question is what next? Unfortunately I can't yet post in the 'items wanted' section because my post count isn't high enough. I'm hoping someone will come across this and help me out with finding a stock arm, or have a trick or something for the steering. I am NOT spending the money on a hy-steer setup!

Do you need the pitman arm (connected to the steering gear box), the drag link (connects the pitman arm the j-arm) or the tie rod (connects the steering knuckles on both sides). If you need a tie rod, I've got one of those. If you need a pitman arm then I would look into buying a compete steering box off of ebay - tons of people get rid of them cheap when they buy high-steer systems. If you need a drag link then Pro Comp makes one.

As far as I can tell, I just need the steering arm that goes from the axle to the tie rod

So the answer is D, none of the above... I would try making friends with somebody that has recently completed a high steer conversion. They may have some that are trying to get rid of. On a side note, you will need to re-align the steering knuckles with the correct shims for that j-arm.

Is it the drop drag link you need?

Or is it the J-Arm?

Pay no attention to the sites I used, I was just getting pictures so as to clarify.

I recommend getting High Steer from someone. Be done with the push-pull linkages/tie-rods and get some beefier components that will give you the safety and peace-of-mind you need.

Wabfab, Allpro, Marlin, Davez, Sky, Etc....

If indeed u did do a SAS then u would already have an ifs steering box and whatnot. That would be the incorrect steering setup for what the OP is looking for. I wish I was farther along in my build and had the hysteer done, then I would have the correct parts.

I appreciate it, but like I said I'm not doing a high-steer, everything worked just fine for me until I decided to lower the truck and run smaller tires. I just want to fix the steering like stock and save money. The truck gets used only a few times a year, I don't want to invest that type of time or money into something I don't need.

BUT the steering j-arm that he took off of the solid axle when he converted it a high steer would be the correct part.

Hey if he's got the j-arm I'll try it.. I've had no luck with junk yards or e-bay! Right now I'm trying to modify the tall drop one I have but I'm not sure it's gonna work out

Perhaps I am confused as to what exactly you need. Post a picture and we'll be able to point you in the correct direction.

5.13's aren't available for toyotas. 3.90, 4.10, 4.56, 4.88's, 5.29's & 5.71

Stock Toyota axles. I was told by the previous owner they were 5.13s or "5.somethins" cause he paid a shop to do all the work. I'm betting they're lower than the stock 4.10s though because the truck would turn the 40s QUICK and I could hold 70 in 5th without loss of power.

I'll take it on the highway and see what RPMs I run with the new 33s and figure it out from there. Also picked up a stock J-arm off eBay for $60 to my door, supposed to be here tomorrow so hopefully I can find time over the weekend to get it swapped out and get back on the road!
