My dash has a crack in it about a half inch long. What would be a good way to prevent it from getting any bigger? I searched but couldn't find anything on stopping a growing crack

i dont know of any way to.... i just replaced mine for 235 installed!

 

You might be able to drill a small hole at the end of the crack and then glue the crack back together, the hole will help stop it from propagating. A dash cover will also help, keeps the sun off the vinyl, or use a good vinyl UV protectant like Formula 303.

The way to stop a crack from growing is to drill a small hole at either end of the crack. That's what we do with small cracks in the skin on aircraft wings and so forth.
As for the dash after you drill the holes you could try to re secure everything with a good quality ABS plastic/vinyl adhesive. You want to use something that remains flexible and has some gap filling properties as well. If you can't get a colourless type it's not a big deal the Vinyl/Plastic interior paints from duplicour are excellent and Napa can order then in an exact match formula for most of our trucks.

 

Using Vinylex Vinyl Protectant will prevent your dash from cracking in the future. It will stop it from peeling, and the sunscreen also works well to help prevent drying and fading. I've used it for years. it does not leave any greasy, oily or shiny look or feel behind. It is absorbed into the vinyl and does not stay on the surface like other products.

yup, drill a hole at the end to stop it . i do it at work from time to time on heavy equipment.. works on metal, plastic, ect...

 

I really like the way Vinylex goes right into the vinyl. It's not greasy, oily or sticky like the other stuff out there. It also works great on fiber glass too! Tried it on a friends boat.. cleaned the fiber glass right up!

 

+1 on this: The hole will -- if done correctly -- relieve the stress riser, and 303 Aerospace will prevent further aging of the material.

 

I wish Vinylex would keep my neighbor down the road from selling crack
