How many inches of lift needed for a Diff drop ??

Hey all, been doing my homework and studying up on all the suspension possibilities for my 98 Taco. Want to put a ~2 inch suspension lift on it but want to eliminate the possibility of added CV joint wear.

The Question: Would a 2 inch lift benifit from a Diff Drop? Or is a 2 inch lift fine without a Diff Drop and would be a waste of time and $$ ??

Thanks,
David

Well, a 2" lift isn't really going to stress your CVs so I would say it's a waste of time. A diff drop would help somewhat, but you can always look at your CV angles after doing the lift and decide whether you still want the diff drop.

While I agree with Ryan as far as the absolute necessity of a diff drop for a 2" lift, in my mind, it is so inexpensive and easy to do that the peace of mind that comes from having it is well worth it, IMHO

At what point does a Diff drop really help 2.5", 3" ??

It helps with any lift, a 1" lift and a 1" diff drop would put the CV angles back to stock. When it becomes necessary is the real question. Like Tacoclimber said it's cheap insurance.

Thanks guys, I do like to play it safe when it's affordable, thanks for your opinions!

Say CJ, what's the Arizona West Coast?? The River or the Sea of Cortez?

Colorado River... "Arizona West Coast" just sounds cooler than "Bullhead City"...

Bullhead's basically a very hot, very dry beach town, only with a river instead of an ocean...

Most folks generally go with a diff drop at lifts above 2":

You can install one at lower lifts. This would be a good idea if you notice increased CV joint wear or find the boots on the axles needing more frequent replacement.
