How to identify LSD?

We're going to go look at an 85 4WD. Is there a way to tell if it has an LSD, short of actually lifting the rear and spinning the wheels?

Well yes, they are all open diffs from the factory, but who's not to say they added one after the fact? I think he is saying they are claiming there is an LSD in there and they want to confirm it.

Yep, like stated above, make a tight turn and see if it binds up.

Well, mine never chirped ever. An LSD is not a locker. It won't chirp the tires.

Best way to test is to find some gravel, and try burning out. Better is to do it in low range on a dirt pile. If both rear wheels start spinning, you have an LSD, if only one spins, you have an open diff.

mid 80's had an LSD as an option for a short while. it was somewhat of a promotional deal from toyota. friend of mine has an 87 with an LSD. he bought the truck off the show room floor. it was very a uncommon package, but i think is was on the SR5. anyway, my point is that it could have an LSD from the factory, but very unlikely.

Which is why I suggested driving up a dirt mound. As the tires dig in, only one will spin if the diff is open.

I've got an '85 SR5 Xtra-cab 22RE-Efi that's stock as a rock but spins both rear tires...forward or backwards!! Don't know the axle code, but judging by how it acts..I'd say it has a factory LSD of some sort...or somethings about to break!

This. LSD is NOT equal to a locker.

From the factory, 99.999% Toyota's are open diffs. And yes, who's to say somebody hasn't bought into the scam of a TRD or Aurburn ltd. slip and put one in it.

If you want a dang good LIMITED SLIP, you get a True Trac or Torsen.

To test. Jack one wheel up and spin it around with the tranny in neutral.

The wheel on the ground is acting like the one that needs power. And the one spinning is the one that actuates the springs and clutches (or gears if you're lucky) to do it.

The G80 is the POS "Gov Lock", but you get the point with the "limited slip"

A factory locker was the Torsion LSD unit, well was stock in the Supras. Some installed them into our trucks. The solid axle I SAS'd had one in it. To my knowledge wasn't stock in our trucks.

There were 2 ltd slips, NOT lockers, in Supra's.

1 was a spring and plate type in the 7.5" rear early Supra's.

And the other was an 8" Torsen in the later 1-2jZ type Supra's.

Try to be less confusing with, "A factory locker was the Torsion LSD unit" next time...

Only took you 2 days to search, your so much more accurate when you search instead of just running your fingers.

I stand corrected thought listing LSD was clear.

I knew about the 7.5" already, but I'm not a fan of those ltd. slips...

They are HIGHLY economical tho...

The 8" Supra/Torsen I didn't know, or even know what 8" diff they bolted into. I have searched E-Bay though and found them too expensive, so that option was out.

If you've put on in a Hilux, I'd love to know what diff specifically they (the 8") bolt into...

The V6/Turbo or the 4cyl? Or both?

And PS. Don't blame me TRD listed a clutch plate and spring type LSD in their parts catalog...

So there is a "TRD" limited slip...

When I bought the front axle for my SAS to my suprise when a started taken axle apart there was a Torsen unit in it. I can't remember if I posted pics here on YT or just email Zuk, cause I had no idea what it was. I sold it for almost what I paid for the axle. Which was a fair price to the buyer. I got a pretty good deal on front axle. Brakes were rusted up so couldn't spin then to check open dif.

I think the Torsen is a superior unit to the clutch type LSDs. It also does a better job of splitting the torque to the tires the minimum is like 20% all gear driven. No additives to put in oil either.
