Hot transfer case shifter 1999 4runner

I was on a road trip last week and noticed that my shifter shaft was kind of warm. I then slid the boot down on the transfer case shifter and found it was so hot I could not hold the metal shaft for more than ten seconds. I went into a lube place and had them check the fluid levels since I had minimal tools with me. Everything was topped off. Does anyone have any experience with this?

That's normal. There's a lot of heat under your floor pan. Don't worry about it. Welcome to YT.

Yep, mine get hot, too, especially when driving at high speed. I find synthetic gear oil in the t-case helps to lower those temps maybe 10-15 degrees F.

Thanks for the replies. After I had the fluids checked to make sure it was not running dry I stopped worrying about it. I might drain and refill with a synthetic. I am running Amsoil in the motor.
