Who makes the best high steer kit? Bad luck with two so far.

 

Which two have given you bad luck and why? That will help us determine what might work for you.

Also, some info on your setup. Most Hi-steer setups are basically the same thing.

High steer is not rocket science. All the kits are basically the same thing.

What does "bad luck" mean? Some more details would help.

I had a originaly had a home made high steer kit where the arms were so fat they dented my shocks. The arms were made out of 1" steel that was drilled and tapered with a 7/8 vari-bit. The steering pins were welded on and the an angle was put into the arm with a grinder for the tie rod link. The tie rod and drag link were made out of poop pipe sch40 sprinkler pipe that ended up bending under the pressure of my 35" tires. Someone really did it up but it was crap in comparison to the whats on the market now.

After that I ran a trail gear setup it was perfect then I ran across a killer deal ($300) on a front 84 axle that was trussed, gusseted, armored, and with an all-pro kit with the 5th stud modification in the knuckle. It seemed as if the all pro tie rod ends and arms were of slightly better quality but still was pretty much the same as trail gear. by the way I sold my TG high steer for $200, my original axle housing for $100 and I still have the knuckles for sale, so I'll end up making money on the deal right now I am even + my labor

 

im running the Trail Gear kit right now.. but Marlin Crawler just came out with some wicked new arms.... waayyy Beefy

 

I know this thread is old but I've been searching around on info on which highsteer kit to get. And I don't want to start a new thread. Anyone running the sky manufacturing kit with the ifs box and mount included? Or any other relavent info on highsteer and what kits are better than others? And yes I know there are all pretty much the same, I would just like to buy one and be happy with it the first time.

Buy it from me and it will be right and you won't have any problems. I run the ones I sell on all my Toyotas. Sold dozens more with no problems.

Ebay high steer and youll find the trail gear for 300 shipped , and youll find alot for around 250 shipped , they really are all close to being the same . Marlins is a little more beefier but you pay for that .

Well I'm not going that serious that I'll need the 6 studs. The reason I ask about the sky kit is because its on sale right now for 550 with the ifs box, mount, and stabilizer so to me that sounds like a good deal.
Anyone run the sky kit?
Is the quality just as good as the other companies?

 

I am running the trail gear kit from wab-fab.
Running 35" tires with power steering on an '81. I would love to do the six shooter kit some time.
One thing that kills high steer installs is incorrect installations of the arm studs. Ordering the ARB stud kits is expensive @ $9/each but it well worth it insurance wise.

Also-do not mount your IFS box until you have your springs and axle mounted.
-you need a minimum of a 3" lift for high steer

 

okay thanks for the replies, I've down some research, not worried about the install, I like to take my time and do it right the first time.I will look into the arb studs thanks for the tip. I have 3" downey springs up front. Now you say 3" is enough and I've read other places that 4" is minimum. So 3" is possible what other factor are involved with making 3" lift work with highsteer?

 

I am currently running the sky kit.. No complaints about it. But then again like it's been said high steer is just about all the same. I too have sold several trail-gear kits and everyone has been very happy.

 

thanks tofer for the reply on the sky kit just wanted imput from someone running it before I buy it. But can someone answer my question with highsteer and only 3" of lift because if I don't have to go higher I don't want too, trying to stay low.
