Hi-Lift Jack

So I was finally able to find a Hi-Lift jack on craigslist for $40. It is an older model and has not been used in a while but I cleaned and lubricated everything and it works like new. The problem is that there are areas where the powder coat had chipped off and it is beginning to rust. I would like to paint the jack with rust prevention paint. Has anyone done this? Will paint ruin the jack and cause it to not function properly? Can I disassemble it so I don't damage the sensitive parts? Thanks in advance!

Interesting. I got mine on CL for 15 bucks (pics are in my build thread).
Any suggestions on a good rust converter? I've never used one. What kind of paint?

Something like this??

I'm thinking naval jelly, then converter/paint combo listed above. Done.

got mine on cl for $35 older model 48" as well as the extreme model. but It didn't have the handle, just bought a length of pipe for the handle and drilled a hole in it for the handle pin which i picked up at a local hardware store.

I am debating whether or not to refurb mine with por-15.

if you want to rebuild it or just paint it here's a good link:

It comes in a variety of colors! (Black, silver, grey).
I talked to the guy at Wesco, he said paint it on and hit it with a topcoat.
I'm going to pick up a 4oz tin of por and a can of spray enamel and call it a day.

I picked up a rebuild kit at 4 wheel parts for 14 bucks, and a can of por-15 for another 8.
I tore the jack apart in about 3 minutes, hit all the pieces with a wire wheel and then a quick buff with a die grinder(stripping pad). The por didn't go on quite as well as I would have liked...its thin and dripped a bit. The pieces are curing in my garage. I'll assemble and post up some pics tomorrow once its hardened.

They recommend using one of the following: white lithium grease, light penetrating oil, silicon lubricant, or teflon lubricant. I just picked up a can of Liquid Wrench Silicone Spray Lubricant for $3-$4 from Lowes and it has worked well so far. I plan on keeping the can in my truck so I can lubricate the jack before every use to keep it working properly.

I was wandering the same thing...Does anyone know of a good rust converter? Where can I buy it? I have never seen it at a local hardware store...Also, I was really hoping to be able to use spray paint rather than POR 15. The POR 15 just seems really messy. Does anyone know of a good spray paint I can use or it POR 15 the way to go?

So I finally have some time to post some pics of the jack. I also started a write-up on how I am going to paint the jack. It can be found here:
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f106...t-jack-220201/

Now on to the pics!

Its not in horrible shape but I think it could use some work.

Mine was in a lot rougher shape. I stripped it pretty well, and used por-15. Brushing on two coats added more thickness than I anticipated and the jack which didn't work perfect before, works less well now. I'm almost ready to grind it all down and just rustoleum, but can't be bothered. I might just drop 60 bucks for a cheap new jack for the short term, and rehab this in my "spare time". Or sell it for my 15 back

I think if I was going to do this again, I'd go with a can of Napa Brand satin black rust inhibiting paint for 3 bucks. When it scratches up really bad, you can just touch it up. Por15 is an awesome product, but its a pain in the butt to apply and store, and I don't think its the best for high lifts.

Thanks for the info! I was actually thinking about using POR 15 to stop the rust and prevent further rust, but I honestly just didn't want to have to deal with it. Similar to your experience, I have heard from other people that it is great stuff but it is a PITA to apply and get an even coat. Normally I wouldn't be really concerned about it but it can be a problem when it comes to the functionality of the jack...So I am planning on using some Naval Jelly to get any remaining rust off then I am going to hit it with a couple of light layers of Rustoleum Automotive Primer and finish it up with some Rustoleum Protective Enamel. I will let you know how it goes in case you do decide to strip the paint and try again.

i recommend. a quick sand blast nothing professional. just to take edge off. and por-15. really must get deep to effectively use por-15. maybe even a wire wheel.

Smile

So I finished the project about 2 weeks ago but I just haven't had a lot of time to update the thread. I am really happy with how it came out! After assembly and a couple sprays of silicone lubricant it works like new! If anyone is interested I put together a writeup on the whole process:

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f106.../#post51561958

And now on to the pics...
