help 22 re engine 91 toyota

Losing radiator fluid. Do not think it is the head gaskets. The leak is coming from a gasket that is by the thermostat housing. I do not know what it is called. Need help finding out what it is so I can find a how to fix it on the net. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Any pictures?
Do you know where the head gasket is located? Can YOU tell where the head and the block meet? Thats where the head gasket is at. Now, is the coolant coming from there? Describe the part its coming from. "A gasket by the thermostat housing" is pretty vague. There are quite a few gaskets by the t-stat housing. It could be the t-stat housing itself.

Quoted by toyota4x4907: "It could be the t-stat housing itself."

That was my first guess also. It might just be a loose radiator hose clamp. What kind of clamp is installed? Screw type, or is it a spring type? If it's screw type, just try tightening it up. They can become loose due to expansion and contraction. Best to replace it with spring type, since they allow for expansion and contraction without loosening up.

Wesshole, this is something that is going to be impossible for any of us to determine with any certainty. If you upload some pictures, that might help.

Basically, you're just going to have to find out where it's coming from, look up to see what that part is, and then go from there. If it is a head gasket, that's a pretty big job. If it's just the t-stat housing gasket, not as big of deal.

Good luck and welcome to YT!

22r/e HGs are not a big job, actually. I did mine in about 10 hours, $230, and have over 2000 miles on it and no problems.

907, I agree, a HG job isn't a big deal for us and other experienced wrench spinners. But for somebody that isn't sure what parts are what, they probably shouldn't try tackling a HG job.
