Headgaskets for dummies

Headgaskets for dummies
Ok, so it seems that opinions regarding the 3.0V6 are as varied as tastes in color or anything else.
I really want to purchase a 1993-95 4Runner for my extra haul fishing rods and shotguns in vehicle. I might do some light off roading, but nothing more than through a field that might be a bit damp and soggy.
I just want something that is fairly inexpensive and reliable as we all know that old Toyotas can be. However, can anyone give me a definitive on how to know if head gaskets will be an issue for a truck I look at? Does having them redone/replaced/rebuilt assure anything at all that it won't be an issue again? Is there anything I can do to the engine after buying to make sure this doesn't become a factor in the future?
Which would be a better, more reliable motor in your opinions, a 3.0V6 with say 150k, or a 3.4L with 250k?
Thanks, sorry for all the questions, but I really appreciate the help and your guys' knowledge is amazing.

Hi watchesnboats.
Although I think you'll be pleased either way, the 3rd gen 4runners (3.4L) are becoming cheaper and many are available out there so that's something to consider. Of course you're gonna have more of a head gasket issue with the 3.0 liter, but even at that, those instance are not common at all. good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I had a 95 before and LOVED it. But I understand it did blow a headgasket about 3 months after I traded it in.
I never noticed any issues with it, which is what kinda scares me about picking up another 3.0
