head gasket replacement
Hey everyone, i'm new to yotatech but have been checking out alot of threads here. I have a 88 yota pickup with a 22re, 5 speed 4x4 that i am replacing the head gasket. The truck has been running hotter than normal so i checked coolant alittle low and then checked the oil- not bad but alittle milky. Then it started to blow white smoke out the exhaust (enough for me to turn around and go home). I was hoping to catch it before it did any real damage. So i ripped it down praying it was just the gasket, but once i took the head off and started looking at the gasket, i can't really see any cracks in it. So i am here to ask, could it still be the gasket or am i looking at some bad news? - cracked block or head?- Thank you for any info Derek

Not necessarily the head.
you should be able to see your timing chain with the valve cover off and see if your guide is gone and maybe the chain breached the timing cover......like mine.
welcome to yotatech

thank you, i just finished the job and double checked the timing chain everything looked ok. can anyone tell me where the cold start switch is? I forgot to replace it while replaceing the head gasket, it's 32 degrees here and ever since winter started the truck will not start up in real cold weather. i also heard i can bypass it by grounding the green wire. I use to pop start it and then it would run great, i just dont wanna pop it right after doing a head gasket thank you again -great site-
