The 3.4 I'm swapping in my truck is out of a race truck previously so the heater hoses are just looped at the back of the engine. If I want to hook up the heater on my '89 pickup to the new 3.4L engine, which one goes where?

Also, on the drvr side of the engine there's a canister looking piece right behind the motor mount area with more hoses going to it. What exactly is that? It looks like possibly more heater hose lines that are looped to make a closed circuit and bypass the heater. Can someone explain?
