so i broke 4 of the 6 studs that hold my front manual hub on. is there a danger to driving my 88 4runner in this condition?

i was going to replace front caliper rotors pads wheel bearings and half shafts but at this point i am stopping before i brake anything else.

can the broken studs be pressed out and new ones pressed in or do i need to get a new manual lock out bug thing with the studs in it?

No they don't press out. They are threaded. The replacements look like this:

Marlin has the parts available seperately. Trailgear and Wabfab have kits with everything (stud, nut, lock washer, cone washer) If you broke them off so that there is still enough stud sticking out to get a vice grip on them, you may be in luck. If they are flush with or below surface of the hub rotor you'll have to drill/ez out the remnants. Can be done, but much more of a PITA. Nerve wracking too, because you'll be worrying about screwing up a thread the entire time. Can't say about driving with 4 studs missing. My general common sense says no. If the two remaining are exactly opposite each other, then maybe, but I'm not going to be the one that says it's OK. Take a crack at getting them out, you've got nothing to lose at this point.

i have some special stud removing sockets. hopefully they work some magic.

please pb blaster work some miracles for me

 

So I have somewhat the same problem. I didn't break the studs, but did strip them because I didn't use a torque wrench. The nuts are stuck on there but will neither tighten or loosen. How do you remove the studs? Do I have to take the entire assembly back of and remove the brake disc or can the studs be removed from the front with the hub still in place?

 

the studs can sometimes be removed by using a special stud removing socket.

More often than not, the studs will just break off flush with the hub housing due to age and corrosion.

 

i was able to remove my studs with the hub still installed on the truck. i soaked them really good with pb blaster and then used the tool that deathcougar was refering to. it came as a 4 socket set. and i used the 8mm stud remover socket to get them out. all of my broken studs came out no problem. then i just used the same tool to install new studs and away i went.

 

where can I buy an 8mm stud removing tool

 

i snapped all of my off, and got the replacments from front range off road, these are grade 8 bolts and seem to be holding up pretty good, but they are kinda high. may be some thing to think about.

 

i bought mine at work CARQUEST auto parts.
