Has anybody painted their frame with POR15 or any other frame paint, I want to do it but dont know what to use?

 

I'm going to paint mine with POR15 after I have the SAS brackets welded on.

 

yeah, I'm finally done with the frame on my 85. por15 is freaking great. The cleaner they try to sell with it is nice, but not sure something else would be as good and cheaper. The metal ready prep stuff rocks, it does a great job making the surface ready for por15 to bite into. Get the 6-pack thing of por15, each can is just about the perfect amount to do 2 coats on a small chunk of frame.

 

I used POR15 on the front part of mine and was pretty impressed.

NOTE: it will NOT stick to smooth metal, you need some rust or a HEAVY etch for it to grab in to, but once it does, it's SOLID.

 

I'm painting my frame this weekend with Rustoleum.

1. Hose of then powerwash
2. degrease, then wash again
3. self etching "rust" primer
4. gloss black Rustoleum, two coats

I chose gloss black cause I wanted mud to wash off easy and its pretty smooth when you get a couple coats on. Some people spray a light oil all over the frame, apparently it keeps rust off rather well. I couldn't stand that though, I wrench on my truck almost weekly and that would cause a huge mess.

 

I used Tremclad gloss black (aka rustolium in the us) last year. I however did NOT prep the frame properly. It looked fantastic for a few months till it faded away.

Im hopfally going to redo it in a month or so.

I washed, hosed, pressure-washed, sand blasted, cleaned and used Rustoleum pro grade stuff when i restored this frame.

I kept as much of the original factory coating as possible as its great stuff. This frame was in good condition when I got it so there wasnt much rust to blast away.

There was rust on it, surface rust scattered all over the place, with moss and dirt, grease and everything else you can expect on a 21 yr old truck frame that I found sitting in the grass side of a barn.

Primed the whole thing.



Then did many coats of Rustoleum over it.





I researched all of the popular frame coatings and decided Rustoleum was cheap, easy to maintain and holds up excellent. I don't live in the rust-belt ie places where the roads are salted or near a hot humid ocean etc.. if I did I might of just had the sucker powder-coated for ... around 300-400 bucks which is way better than anything you can paint on it.

A year later the frame still looks just it did when I put the truck on it =) Washes off clean and shines like new.

That is a thing of beautiy Drew! I wish able to do my frame and running gear without the body on!

 

My frame had slight rust and scaling on it, mostly on the welded areas like the cab mounts.

I had some rust converter spray laying around and I didnt even really wash the underside that well and used 2 cans (iirc its made by rustoleum). So far its been 3 months and it aint fallen or flaked off yet. Underside is now very nice and black.
