FJ40 Igniter

FJ40 Igniter
Back in 2/2008 to 7/2008 "freddie" posted an issue with his FJ40 engine stops running after about 15 minutes and will not restart until it has sat for awhile. I have the same problem. The last post I saw was from "Grex", asking if "freddie" found a solution. I did not see a response. Was it the igniter or something else?

My FJ40 is Dec 1978 production. Carb not fuel injected. Semi transistor ignition. Manual shows two transistors in a box mounted on top of the coil. Usually the engine will run for anywhere from 15min to hours. Seems when it gets hot it shuts down. Wait till it cools ( hours to overnight) it will start up again. Problem is getting worse and difficult to even start and keep running. Getting difficult to diagnose.

Have you tested the signal generator?
Actually, the harder the failure the easier it is to find the problem.
My biggest nightmares were those vehicles with intermittent issues that never seemed to happen after the customer brought in their vehicle.

It’s inside the distributor. The signal generator replaced the old style ignition points. Iirc, Toyota phased out points by the end of 1977. The signal generator is remarkably durable, but something worth testing based on your symptoms.
Can I assume you've confirmed "no spark" when the vehicle is not starting?
