fix it or throw it

Hope im in the right place here. Im new to the forum and toyota. So I ended up with a 95 4runner with a bad motor, according to the seller, its out of the vehicle and tore apart, not sure why, and I have another one thats a long block from a 95 as well. I know nothing about this one. Question is. Should I compression test this one, put head gaskets in if ok and do a timing belt kit and run it? Or do I just go with new long block.... Thanks

Welcome to Yota Tech!!

Wow that is a hard call to make.

Be nice to know just what engine your talking about??

Then it would not hurt for you to learn as much as you can about what you have.

Then you can make a much more informed decision as what you want to do.

If the money is in the budget for a new long block $$$$$ what is the rest of the vehicle like.

A real pain to do a compression test on a engine on a stand or on the floor.

why don't you just rebuild one and keep the other as a spare or sell it? What engines do you have?

eww... you could burn it to the ground?
if you're in the market for a new engine then purchasing the requisite parts for a rebuild is definitely an option.

Sell both engines and get a 3.4 to swap in.

So i have read a few things about swapping in the 3.4. What would be your suggestive way of doing that. I read something about needing the computer to match the 3.4??? Wiring? Any place In particular I can get the info, or a local thread? Thanks

well we have a section on 3.4 swaps.

start with the ones dealing with what year 4Runner you have.

If one is lucky you buy the complete vehicle so you have most all the parts you need.

Start looking around being unsure just where you are shipping could be a major factor.

Then if your looking Brand New maybe still from your local dealer.

I got a long block coming. He is actually delivering to my house on this sunday. I have bought from him in the past. They have the japan takeouts and rebuilds. Comes with timing kit assembly and water pump. I think he said dist too. 1500 and some change after core rebate. Now i need to figure out if im going with headers of the stock exhaust.
