First Yota

Just bought my first Toyota, it's a 85 extra cab 4x4, don't really know too much about it, neither did the guy I bought it from. It's lifted 4" I believe, has 33 12.5 15's, twin stick (which he told me was stock?) and I'm not sure what other modifications, it has a 9000# ramsey winch. He told me the guy he bought it from said it had a front locker, how would I find this out? He never took it wheeling and there's not a scratch on it, i'm looking to take it out into the hills and look forward to learning the ins and outs of yotas.

welcome and congrats on the 85 - I assume you know that's a very desireable year due to the 22RE engine and last year of the front solid axle?

To find out if the front is locked, make sure the front hubs are locked, then jack up the front axle. once the wheels are both on the ground and hubs locked, rotate one wheel by hand. If the other wheel rotates with it, it's locked. If it rotates the other direction, it's an open differential.

Pretty sure that's how you can tell.

Now....where are PICS??!!!!

Actually what I have to do with my is jack the front end up. Spin one wheel backwards then spin it forward to engage the locker. Or I could spin it forward then backward no matter which way just reverse directions to get the locker to engage. Sometimes you can here the locker ratchet a bit before catching. First time I did this I thought that my stuff was messed up. My rear does the same thing. I can spin my drive shaft while someone holds one tire still and they will both catch and spin forward.

Thanks for the insight, i'll check it out. Yeah, in doing some research i found that its the last year for the straight axle, and first for the 22re, mine is the 22r but it only has 152,000 original miles on it. Like I said the guy I bought it from was as clueless as me about it..lol. He said twin sticks were stock on an xtra cab but I haven't found or heard anything backing that up. All in all I think $2000 was a hell of a deal!

I'm almost positive thats not a stock '85 grill. Looks like he swapped it for another year model grill.
